Working Title:
Research Specialist
Official Title:
SR RESEARCH SPEC(T16BN) or RESEARCH SPECIALIST(T16DN) or ASSOC RESEARCH SPEC(T16FN)
Degree and area of specialization:
Bachelor's Degree in molecular biology/biological sciences is required.
 
  
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Minimum work experience of at least 1-2 years of previous laboratory experience and experience with experimental cerebral ischemia surgery in rats/mice is required.

Principal duties:
The research specialist will perform research related to understanding the role of the innate immune system in repair and recovery following focal cerebral ischemia.

50% experimental ischemia surgeries in rats/mice
- Performing Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion surgeries in rats and mice
- Using Laser Doppler to check cerebral blood flow during above surgeries
- Post-op care of MCAO animals
- Neurobehavioral assessment of animals post-op
- Dissection, collection and preparation of brains after sacrifice
- Sacrifice and perfusion of above animals after specific time points

15% Molecular biology, Histology and Microscopy, tissue culture techniques
- RT-PCR, qPCR, RNA sequencing and Western blots
- Analysis of gene expression in rodent and human brain tissues
- Microscopy: bright field and fluorescent techniques, 3-D imaging
- Histology: Preparation of rodent brains for cryosectioning and immunofluorescence histochemistry
- Maintain cell lines in culture.

10% General lab duties:
- Purchasing and managing inventory of laboratory supplies and general lab maintenance.
- Performing required recordkeeping such as hazardous waste disposal
- Training and working with students and undergraduate helpers.
- Resolve unexpected/unplanned issues as they arise.

15% Assist and teach students lab techniques and procedures and help others with their experiments

10% Semi-independent research project responsibilities
  Additional Information
 Good written and oral communication skills and ability to perform literature searches.

A 12 month evaluation period will be required.

Position is currently for one year but may have the possibility for extension or become renewable depending on the need/funding.
Requirements:
A criminal background check will be conducted prior to hiring.
A period of evaluation will be required
