  Position Summary:
 This position is in the Communicable Disease Division (CDD) of the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH). The employee in this position functions as one of a team of microbiologists and lab technicians in the Virology & Rabies Laboratory under limited supervision. Duties of the position include, but are not limited to, performing manipulation of patient, animal and reference samples, entering specimen data and communications into the CDD Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), generating reports and worksheets and performing other routine laboratory activities. This position is responsible for working collaboratively with others to complete the laboratory testing work required to meet the deliverables of the APHL/CDC National Influenza Resource Center Contract. Testing to cover other areas of the Virology Laboratory will be completed as needed. This position participates in ongoing quality improvement /quality assurance activities and the instruction of laboratorians, students and medical personnel in laboratory procedures. Primary work hours are 7:45 A.M. to 4:30 P.M., Monday through Friday, including weekend and holiday work on a rotational basis.
Principal duties:
80% Performance of Instrument Maintenance/Specimen Preparation, Testing and Resulting
-Evaluate and prepare specimens for testing.
-Perform instrument start up, operation and shut down.
-Perform complex analytical microbiological and/or diagnostic routine and non-routine tests or procedures.

10% Involvement in Quality Improvement, Assurance and Control; Demonstration of Constructive and Effective Teamwork and Communication Skills
-Document Quality Control activities. Review data for trends. Share information as needed.
-Collaborate and communicate with Public Health Laboratories, APHL Leaders and CDC Scientists.
-Organize and monitor the Virology testing activities to meet the deliverables for the WSLH National Influenza Resource Center.

5% Participation in Training, Education and Outreach; Participation in Method Evaluation/Development and other Projects as assigned
-Train others as needed to perform laboratory testing.
-Answer questions posed by WSLH customers.
-Assist with new test validations and implementation.
-Attend and participate in Team meetings.

5% Involvement in Division/Lab wide Responsibilities; Assistance in Laboratory Fiscal Activities
-Provide direct assistance to work team and/or WSLH testing areas as needed or directed.
-Assist with maintaining adequate laboratory testing supplies and inventory.
-Other duties as assigned.
  Additional Information
 A successful visual color screening test is required prior to an offer of employment. This position requires travel as needed, and applicants must have experience delivering lectures / presentations. Applicants must be available for on-call public health emergencies, weekends and holidays.

A criminal background check will be conducted prior to hiring.
A period of evaluation will be required
