Position Summary:
The Power Plant Operator is an entry-level position with working responsibility within the Walnut and Charter Street Heating
Plants. The role's technical duties and responsibilities include:

The monitoring, operation, adjustment, maintenance and repair of technical equipment including:
a. High pressure boilers
b. Chillers
c. Air compressors
d. Steam turbines
e. Fans
f. Pumps
g. Generators
h. Condensate polishers
i. Water treatment systems and related equipment
j. Electronic monitoring controls including our Digital Control System (DeltaV) network.

The duties and responsibilities for this role are usually performed under close supervision.

Principal duties:
35% Assists in the operation, maintenance, and repair boilers of varying types and capacities, and all associated equipment.
- Monitors all primary operating equipment within the boiler operating system.
- Monitors all auxiliary equipment including boiler feed water pumps, forced draft fans, condensate pumps, air compressors, etc.
- Tests boiler water, feed water, cooling water and record results on daily logs.
- Assists in the startup and shut down of boilers and all associated equipment.
- Monitors various pressures, temperatures, steam flow, airflow, water levels, etc.
- Adjusts various control mechanisms to provide for correct operating levels/conditions.
- Monitors the operation of a 10,000 kW turbine driven generator operated in parallel with Madison Gas and Electric Company when working at Charter Street Plant. Makes adjustments as required.
- Performs daily maintenance services and assist with minor repairs to various equipment.

35% Assists in the operation, maintenance, and repair of chillers of various types and sizes and all related equipment.
- Monitors all primary operating equipment within the various chiller operating systems.
- Monitors auxiliary equipment for proper operation, i.e., pumps, condensers, towers, and compressors.
- Assists in the startup and shut down of all chillers, along with all associated equipment.
- Tests tower and chilled water for proper chemical treatment and record results on daily logs.
- Assists in the cleaning and maintenance of chilling plant.

30% General Operations and Miscellaneous work duties.
- Assists in the cleaning of plant work areas and equipment.
- Assists in the planned and emergency maintenance of all plant equipment.
- Assists in the seasonal change over from heating to cooling and special evolutions including assisting in emergency repairs to equipment when necessary.
- Takes readings from charts, meters, gauges, etc., at established intervals.
- Records information on daily log sheets or logbooks.
- Operates waste incinerator and heat recovery boiler and systems, as necessary.
- Other duties as may be assigned by Power Plant Superintendents and Managers.
