Position Summary:
The Publicity Manager oversees the book publicity efforts of the University of Wisconsin Press and reports to the Sales and Marketing Manager. The Publicity Specialist is responsible for strategically planning and executing publicity and media campaigns for the press's scholarly and general interest publications.

The University of Wisconsin Press is a not-for-profit publisher of books and journals. Since our founding in 1936 and the publication of our first book in 1937, the press has published more than 3,000 titles. We have nearly 1,500 titles currently in print, including books of general interest (biography, fiction, natural history, poetry, photography, fishing, food, travel, etc.), scholarly books (African studies, American studies, anthropology, art, classics, environmental studies, ethnic studies, film, gay & lesbian studies, history, Jewish studies, literary criticism, Slavic studies, etc.), and regional books about Wisconsin and the Upper Midwest. The press currently publishes approximately 50 books per year and 12 journals, in both print and electronic formats.

Our mission embodies the Wisconsin Idea by publishing work of distinction that serves the people of Wisconsin and the world.

Principal duties:
Serve as the press's primary publicity representative (25%)

- Initiate and grow relationships with authors, media representatives, university partners, and other external stakeholders.
- Coordinate the scheduling, development, and dissemination of press releases and publicity email campaigns.
- Support the growth of the press's online presence including its website, social media, and other platforms.
- Make media calls and respond to media inquiries.
- Maintain media and publicity data in the press's database.
- Meet with key media representatives to promote the press's new titles.
- Coordinate with the press's journals division on the creation and implementation of a social media strategy for the press's Twitter and Facebook accounts, as well as ones created in the future.
- Analyze and report on the impact of efforts.

Manage the press's book review process (20%)

- Research media contacts and develop review lists.
- Coordinate the release of advance page proofs and book review copies in print and electronic formats.
- Document and evaluate review coverage of UW Press publications.
- Oversee the maintenance of review records.

Coordinate events to promote UW Press publications (20%)

- Support planning, promotion, and execution of author appearances, interviews, and other UW Press events.
- Analyze and report on event impact.

Oversee the creation of marketing copy, writing it when necessary, to be used on book covers, in seasonal catalogs, on the press's website, on social media, and in press releases (15%)

- Adhere to firm schedules to help other departments meet their deadlines.
- Obtain guest blog posts, blurbs, and endorsements.
- Support the planning and development of seasonal and other catalogs.
- Manage content creation for the press's blog.

Coordinate submission of UW Press titles for various book awards (10%)

- Oversee maintenance of award records.
- Analyze and report on effectiveness and impact of efforts.
- Work with the Sales and Marketing Manager to adhere to budget restrictions.

Supervise student workers (10%)

- Draft job descriptions; recruit, hire, and train students.
- Facilitate student workers' professional growth.
