Position Summary:
The Center for Pre-Law Advising (CPLA) is hiring for a new Pre-Law advisor! In addition to 1:1 advising responsibilities, CPLA advisors have Lead Areas, e.g. Lead for Data & Test Preparation and Lead for Professional Development Programming. The person hired for this position will take a lead role in planning and facilitating a range of Pre-Law initiatives, including informing marketing strategies, often in close collaboration with campus partners.

CPLA seeks to help increase access to and equity and diversity within the field of law by providing excellent advising, programming, and other law career development resources to all interested UW-Madison students and alumni - no time limit! CPLA guides advisees on application development, preparing for the LSAT, school selection, strategic exploration of careers in legal fields, and planning for gap/experiential years. CPLA is not affiliated with the UW Law School, though they are a valued campus partner.

CPLA is co-located with the Center for Pre-Health Advising (CPHA) within Pre-Professional Advising in 205 Middleton Building. CPLA and CPHA are highly collaborative, independent advising units with a shared priority of increasing access, equity, and diversity within the fields of law and health. The role reports to the Director of Pre-Professional Advising and works with a group of highly supportive colleagues. The units are administratively based in the Office of Undergraduate Advising (OUA) along with three other direct-service advising units: Cross-College Advising Service (CCAS), Career Exploration Center (CEC), and the Online Undergraduate Degree (OUD) Academic/Career Advising Office.

Pre-Professional Advising currently operates remotely due to COVID-19, and will begin a full transition back to primarily in-person operations starting in August 2021.

Principal duties:
65% Direct Advising
- Advise current undergraduates, transfer students, and UW-Madison alumni through one-on-one appointments, drop-ins, phone, email, and other technologies
- Effectively guide advisees on legal career exploration, the law school application process, extracurricular involvement, test preparation strategies, development of competitive applications, personal statements, and interview skills
- Utilize advising tools such as Advising Gateway and the Student Information System (SIS) to support effective, informed advising and to document advising contacts
- Ensure high-quality, inclusive advising through:
- Building knowledge of theories and current practices in academic advising, career advising, and pre-law advising
- Understanding current and emerging issues facing diverse student populations as they prepare for careers in law
- Partnering with departmental/major, career, and program advisors to provide holistic, student-centered advising and support exploration, inclusion, and retention
- Developing working relationships with Law School admissions officers and post-baccalaureate programs

20% Programming and Event Planning
- Serve as Site Coordinator for annual Law School Expo, a collaborative effort with the Midwest Association of Pre-Law Advisors
- Take a lead role in planning and facilitating other CPLA events such as our Application Bootcamp, Attorney Networking Lunch, and various panels throughout the year.
- Serve as primary liaison to the Law & Policy Working Group, a collaborative cross-campus committee focused on facilitating relationship building, communication, and partnerships among Pre-Professional Advising, L&S SuccessWorks, Legal Studies, La Follette School of Public Affairs, and other law/policy stakeholders on campus
- Serve as primary CPLA representative in the planning of future Law Experience & Advising Program (LEAP) sessions in collaboration with the Law & Policy Working Group and other campus/community partners.
- Develop relationships with on and off-campus constituents (e.g. faculty, campus partners, law firms, practicing attorneys, law schools) to enhance networking opportunities for Pre-Law advisees and program funding partnerships

5% Service & Professional Development
- Build relationships with campus programs that instruct and/or advise pre-law students, including attendance at relevant campus events
- Actively engage in the broader UW-Madison advising community
- Engage in on- and off-campus professional development opportunities that advance the mission of the office and support effective advising practices

5% Workplace Culture & Sustainability
- Actively engage in and prepare for weekly CPLA staff meetings
- Support initiatives led by CPLA colleagues, including attendance at events, service on planning teams as needed, etc.
- Maintain up-to-date onboarding documentation for individual job duties
- Demonstrate a commitment to respect, inclusion, and organizational success
- Communicate via oral, written, and electronic media in a respectful, inclusive, and collaborative manner
- Lead/initiate improvements in area of responsibility
- Participate in efforts to build a positive organizational climate and culture

5% Other duties as necessary
CPLA is a small and dynamic work setting that requires flexibility. Duties may include, but are not limited to, helping with campus events or resource fairs, and may include some evening and weekends.
