Position Summary:
The Employee Relations Consultant is part of a team that is responsible for providing employee relations support for nearly 5,000 faculty and staff within the School of Medicine and Public Health. The consultant will advise SMPH faculty and staff of UW Madison and SMPH policies and procedures, conduct prompt, thorough, and fair HR investigations, provide training to HR and to departmental leaders, case management, conflict management and analyze trends of concerns in the institution.

Principal duties:
45% Conduct Investigations
-Conduct and manage investigations end-to-end, including intake meetings, background research, investigative interviews, and debrief meetings with campus/division leadership. This includes gathering and analyzing facts, applying relevant laws, policies and past practice, and making credible determinations to reach conclusions.

-Prepare comprehensive written investigation reports and effectively communicate those results as needed both verbally and in writing

-Maintain required documentation, including intake and investigative notes, supporting documents and final reports.

-Partner with human resources business partners, managers/supervisors, department leaders, campus offices (e.g., Workforce Relations, Office of Legal Affairs, Office of Compliance), and other appropriate stakeholders to conduct prompt, thorough, and impartial investigations into violations of University policies and procedures -- including but not limited to: staff misconduct, harassment, hostile and intimidating behavior, etc.

30% Consultation
-Serve as a consultant to management staff and as an employee advocate when appropriate. Advise management staff and employees regarding their rights and responsibilities under state, federal and local laws, as well as University and system policies, and human resources best practices to achieve effective and consistent implementation of all laws, and policies to produce positive relations with all employees. Provide facilitation and dispute/conflict resolution advice to department managers and staff.

-Coordinate and assist in resolving a wide variety of human resource issues, including interpretation of human resource policies, procedures and practices related to progressive discipline, performance management activities, accommodation requests, work restrictions, leaves of absence, fitness-for-duty, and employee assistance during crisis situations.

15% Assist ER Manager
-Work closely with the Employee Relations Manager for setting strategies, ongoing employee relations activities, and projects.

-Analyze, track and report information and trends on employee relations issues.

10% Training
-Assist with creating content for training education and facilitate training as appropriately for human resources staff and supervisors.
