ACADEMIC STAFF MEMBERS

Discipline and dismissal, including the appeals process, of an academic staff member are described in Chapter 6 of the Academic Staff Policies and Procedures (ASPP). In an event where an employee’s conduct or performance may result in discipline (other than reprimand) or dismissal, review and consultation with the Academic Personnel Office is required. This review and approval must occur before any proposed action is announced or implemented.

Nonrenewal for performance, including the appeal process, of an academic staff member is described in Chapter 3 (for academic staff on fixed term, renewable appointments) and Chapter 4 (for those with probationary appointments) of the Academic Staff Policies and Procedures (ASPP). In an event where an employee’s performance is unsatisfactory and may lead to a nonrenewal, review and consultation with the Academic Personnel Office is required. The review and approval must occur before any proposed action is announced or implemented.

Termination during the Evaluation Period:  During the evaluation period, the appointment may be terminated by the employing unit at any time without appeal.  The process is described in Chapter 2.04 of the Academic Staff Policies and Procedures. In an event where an employee’s performance is unsatisfactory and may lead to a termination, review and consultation with the Dean/Division’s office is required. Lapses in performance may also result from a disability or personal problem. If the employer knows, or has reason to know, that either of these is or could be a factor affecting the employee’s work situation, review and consultation with the Academic Personnel Office is required before proceeding with termination.
