Disability

There are a number of programs available to help replace your income should you become unable to work due to an illness or accident. Contact Madison Benefits Services for more information and help applying for benefits.

Income Continuation Insurance (ICI)

You must be enrolled in the plan in order to be eligible for benefits. ICI will replace up to 75% of your gross salary if you are unable to work and meet plan requirements. ICI covers both short and long term disabilities.

Long-Term Disability Insurance (LTDI)

You must have some Wisconsin Retirement System service in at least 5 of the last 7 years prior to your disability in order to be eligible for benefits. LTDI provides a monthly benefit of 40% of your final average earnings.

Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) Disability Retirement

If you were hired prior to October 16, 1992 and meet certain service requirements, you may choose between an LTDI benefit and a WRS disability retirement annuity. The benefit is based on your WRS years of service, with remaining years added until your normal retirement age (generally age 65) and your three highest years of earnings.

Duty Disability

If you are in a protective occupation (police officer, firefighter, etc.) and become disabled while performing your job, you may qualify for a Duty Disability.

Worker’s Compensation

If you are injured on the job or acquire a work related illness, you may be eligible for Worker’s Compensation benefits.

Social Security Disability

You may be eligible for disability payments under Social Security if you are considered disabled and are unable to do any type of work for which you are suited.
