Title Specifications

Job Summary:This position functions under the direction of the Biological Safety Officer (BSO) in the Department of Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) within the Division of Facilities Planning and Management (FP&M). This position is responsible for providing training focusing on biological safety including safe handling of biological materials, proper laboratory procedures, hazardous waste disposal and appropriate animal research practices. This position plays a key role in supporting the work of the BSO and the University's Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC).

The Biological Safety Training Specialist accomplishes these goals through training seminar presentations, electronic teaching and printed informational materials. The position will use periodic site visits to research labs and the review of research protocols to assess training needs and inform individuals of learning opportunities. The position will forge day to day relationships with principal investigators and their staff. The duties of this position are crucial for the University to meet the requirements of the NIH/OBA, the CDC, the USDA, and other local, state, and federal authorities.
