Position Summary

Responsible for all phases of feeding, cleaning, handling animals, monitoring herd health, maintaining barn equipment, recording research data and assisting with field activities. This individual works alone at times and thus has to be honest, responsible and work in a safe and calm manner.

 

Goals and Worker Activities

A.45%Perform all activities associated with feeding and care for heifer replacement animals (Breeding colony).
1.Operate tractors, skid steer, feed wagons, TMR mixer, mixing feed carts, elevator, augers, conveyors for feeding, cleaning heifers in a responsible and safe manner.
2. Record all data as required; weights, pens #, type of feed etc.
3.Scrape manure alleys, groom bedding pack and clean pens as required and monitor manure storage pad and retention pond.
4.Apply bedding in pens as required.
5.Monitor fly population and report any increase to herdsman, spray if necessary.
6.Assist in identifying lame cattle and trim hooves when necessary.
7.Assist heifers during calving when necessary. Attend to newborn calf following the standard operating procedures.
8.Administer intravenous (IV) fluids and medicine when necessary to sick cattle.
9.Take feed samples for analysis as required.
10.Assist veterinarian when conducting herd health programs.
   
B.20%Perform all activities associated with a research heifer replacement program.
1. Follow protocols and record data required by researchers daily.
2.Detect heats and follow protocols for breeding based on age or weight of animal.
3.Assist measuring, taping and weighing animals for research and the breeding colony.
4.Assist in sampling blood from cattle.
5.Be familiar with and observe all Research Animal Resource Center rules and protocols.
6.Monitor health and the feed for all fistulated cattle.
7.Assist researchers in collecting samples and cattle measurements.
8.Weigh, record and feed supplements and special rations to the research herd.
9.Breed heifers when ART Advanced is not present or when asked to assist.
   
C.15%Assist with maintenance, repair, fabrication of farm equipment and facilities.
1.Maintain a clean and safe environment in and around all buildings (i.e.) lights, door openers, overhead and passage doors and grounds.
2. Maintain all swinging gates and panels.
3.Maintain and clean all waterers in pens when contaminated.
4.Assist in construction of farm buildings (i.e.) foundations, walls and roof.
5.Assist with fabrication of equipment needed to meet the needs of research.
6.Assist with electrical, plumbing and painting in and around facilities.
7.Adjust head and neck rails when needed for cattle.
8.Check oils and fuels in all motors and change or fill as maintenance schedule requires.
9.Check and maintain all deep cycle batteries as required.
10.Check feed carts, feeder wagons and TMR mixer for apron tightness, gearbox oil levels and greased bearings, as maintenance schedule requires.
   
D.15%Assist with all activities associated with growing crops
1.Plow, till and plant fields as directed.
2.Pick rocks, pull weeds and grade farm roads and parking lot.
3.Mow hay, lawn, road ditches as directed in a safe manner.
4.Load, haul and spread manure as directed and record all activities.
5.Transport forage boxes to feed pad from fields and back to fields in a timely and safe manner.
6.Fill silage bags with forage and sample feed for quality analysis.
   
E.5%General Duties
1.Assist staff in case of emergencies, storms, sickness etc. Operate the station emergency power equipment in case of power outages.
2.Maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, employees, visitors and researchers at the station.
3.Act responsibly to ensure that all safety regulations are followed and that equipment is operated and functioning in a safe manner.
   

Knowledge and Skills

  1. Knowledge of the principles of dairy herd management.
  2. Ability to recognize and identify variations in animal behavior, i.e., estrus, illness.
  3. Ability and willingness to work with dairy cattle I a variety of environments and on weekends and holidays as scheduled.
  4. Ability and/or willingness to learn how to artificially breed cattle using approved practices.
  5. Ability or the willingness to learn the proper techniques in treating cattle, i.e., intravenous injections.
  6. Ability to perform minor repairs and adjustments on farm equipment.
  7. Knowledge of precautions necessary to work under adverse weather and environmental conditions.
  8. Knowledge or willingness to learn the proper and safe techniques required in operating farm vehicles, equipment, and machinery whether it is around cattle or out doing field work.
  9. Knowledge of research techniques and interpersonal skills required assisting researchers.
