Position Summary

Responsible for the milking, feeding, cleaning, handling, and general care of dairy cattle which are used for extensive dairy forage research at the US Dairy Forage Research Center in Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin. Follows specific written and oral instructions pertaining to management and research protocols under general supervision; and completes written and oral communications to supervisors and researchers.

 

Goals and Worker Activities

A.25%Responsible for milking dairy cattle.
1.Operates and aids in the maintenance of a double-eight herringbone milking parlor equipped with automatic take-off units to meet specifications for sale of grade A milk.
2.Prepares cows for milking by stripping each quarter to check for abnormalities in milk quality, pre-dips each teat, and thoroughly dries each teat.
3.Attaches milking units making adjustments in the unit for proper extraction of milk to maintain milk quality and complete removal of milk for each quarter.
4.Monitors removal of milk to insure that all quarters are milked out and applies post-dip to each teat.
5.Treats cows with mastitis, cuts or abrasions as described by standardized procedures and/or directed by the herd manager and/or the veterinarian.
6.Communicates (verbal and written) information of estrous cycles, mastitis treatments, and milk production (as needed) to fellow employees, supervisors, and researchers.
7.Obtains milk samples for biochemical and bacteriological analysis.
8.Disposes of all abnormal milk from cows with mastitis or which have been treated with antibiotics, insecticides, experimental additives, etc. which will contaminate the milk.
9.Cleans and sanitizes all milk contact surfaces and facilities including walls, windows, floors, stalls, pens and pipe work.
   
B.25%Responsible for observing and handling cattle.
1.Directs a smooth, calm movement of cows to and from the milking parlor.
2.Assists in the weighing of cattle and the movement or transport of cattle from one location to another.
3.Restrains cattle for veterinarian diagnosis and treatment.
4.Observes cattle for abnormalities and signs of estrus.
5.Observes pregnant cattle for signs of onset of parturition and provides assistance as required.
   
C.25%Responsible for feeding of dairy cattle under general management and research regimes.
1.Operates silo unloaders, conveyor systems, mixer cart to obtain, mix and deliver designated rations for research and general herd.
2.Operates the manure handling system.
3.Beds animals with adequate amounts of proper bedding material.
4.Scrapes, sweeps, and/or washes down all feed and cow traffic lanes.
5.Performs general cleaning and repairs to maintain the operation and general appearance of the facility.
6.Clips and grooms cattle as needed.
   
D.15%Responsible for the cleaning of the dairy cattle and the facilities.
1.Removes manure and wet bedding from animal areas.
2.Operates the manure handling system.
3.Beds animals with adequate amounts of proper bedding material.
4.Scrapes, sweeps, and/or washes down all feed and cow traffic lanes.
5.Performs general cleaning and repairs to maintain the operation and general appearance of the facility.
6.Clips and grooms cattle as needed.
   
E.10%Performance of general work.
1.Loads, transports and stores hay, feed, equipment and bedding material.
2.Mows grass surrounding the facility and in pasture lots.
3.Performs routine maintenance and repair on facilities, equipment and fences.
   

Knowledge and Skills

  1. Knowledge of basic written and verbal communication for information transfer to foreman and researchers.
  2. Knowledge to interpret written and oral instructions pertaining to research and management protocol.
  3. Knowledge of basic breeding, feeding, cleaning and management needs of dairy cattle.
  4. Knowledge of the dairy cow's lactation cycle.
  5. Knowledge in observing and recognizing abnormal or mastitis milk.
  6. Knowledge of the basic techniques and principles involved in both hand and machine milking.
  7. Knowledge of regulations related to the sanitation procedures required in production of milk for human consumption.
  8. Knowledge of the basic nutrient requirements of dairy cattle.
  9. Knowledge of different forage types and cereal grain types and relative quality of each.
  10. Knowledge to make accurate samples of experimental feedstuffs and measurements for experiments.
  11. Knowledge to use weighing and measuring devices and to make legible accurate recordings of data.
  12. Knowledge to recognize and interpret daily variations in feed intake, milk yield, and body weights.
  13. Knowledge of safe operation and basic function of silo unloaders, feed conveyors, manure handling equipment, milking equipment, batch mixers and farm tractors.
  14. Knowledge to make minor repairs and adjustments on equipment.
  15. Must be familiar with and be able to recognize the difference between normal and abnormal appearances and behavior of dairy cattle.
  16. Knowledge of cattle handling and restraining techniques.
  17. Knowledge of the reproductive function and behavior of dairy cattle.
  18. Knowledge of normal and abnormal calving and recognize requirements for assistance with delivery of a calf.
  19. Knowledge of basic milking machine functions.
  20. Must be able to lift 50 pounds and at least 20 pounds overhead. Position also involves frequent bending and twisting.
