Position Summary

This is journey level construction, repair, and remodeling carpentry work at the University of Wisconsin Madison Physical Plant. The work is performed under the general supervision of a Craftsworker Supervisor.

Goals and Worker Activities

A.75%Remodeling and Repair
1.Remove present partitions, ceilings, doors, floors, and cabinets.
2.Erect new metal and wood scaffolding, shoring, ceilings, partitions, and doors.
3.Install new floors, cabinets, shelves, chalkboards, coat racks, etc.
4.Install hardwood trimming, replace sash and other exterior trim.
5.Remove, repair, or replace roofing as required.
6.Keep supervisor informed on progress.
   
B.15%In-shop Fabrication
1.Construct shelving, cabinetry, tables, chalkboards, doors, etc.
2.Operate machinery such as morticer, tenoner, shaper and electric hand tools.
3.Repair tables, chairs and other furniture.
4.Keep supervisor informed on progress.
   
C.10%Enclosing, Encapsulating, and/or Removing Asbestos-Containing Materials (ACM)
1.Remove wall sheeting, floor tile, ceiling tile, laboratory tabletops, etc., containing asbestos materials.
2.Follow specifications and appropriate procedures for the type of work being done.
3.Comply with personal protection requirements.
4.Cleanup using appropriate work practices.
5.Keep supervisor informed on progress.
   

Knowledge and Skills

  1. Knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, methods, and practices of the carpentry trade.
  2. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety requirements, state code, and general orders of the Department of Workforce Development relating to carpentry work.
  3. Knowledge of all types of carpentry construction, their common and unusual breakdowns, and standard repair procedures.
  4. Knowledge of accepted methods and procedures for encapsulation and removal of asbestos-containing materials (ACM).
  5. Knowledge of methods and techniques used in performing a variety of complex building repair and remodeling work involving ACM.
  6. Skill in the use of all tools and machines common to the carpentry trade.
  7. Skill in communication, including interpersonal.
  8. Ability to perform physical labor required in the performance of normal carpenter duties including: a. Lifting a minimum of 80 lbs. b. Bending from the waist repeatedly as in nailing studs to a plate lying on a deck. c. Work with arms extended above the head for at least one minute at a time. d. Stooping by bending at the knees as often as necessary to perform tasks. e. Twisting at the waist at least 90 degrees. f. Performing duties while standing on a ladder. g. Climbing and working at reasonable heights.
