Position Summary

This position is responsible for the extraction and analysis of environmental, industrial and quality control samples for organic contaminants such as PCB congeners, pesticides, PAHs, VOCs, and emerging chemicals of concern such as PBDEs, endocrine disrupters, and pharmaceuticals. In this position the chemist will be using gas and liquid chromatography with various detectors such as mass spectrometry, flame ionization, and electron capture. In addition to the operation of these instruments, the analyst is responsible for maintenance and trouble shooting of equipment, as well as literacy, in the associated software. This position functions under close supervision progressing to limited supervision.

Goals and Worker Activities

A.75%Analysis of Environmental Samples for Organic Pollutants under General Supervision of a Higher Level Chemist or Supervisor
1.Prepare and extract fish, wildlife, water, soil, sediment, and air according to approved methodology for organic pollutants.
2.Inject sample extracts into a gas and/or liquid chromatograph.
3.Interpret data into concise and accurate reports that may be used in litigation.
4.Enter accurate sample information and results in the laboratory computer system.
5.Maintain and repair gas chromatographs and gel permeation chromatographs.
6.Perform routine laboratory duties, such as wash glassware, dispose of completed samples according to UW Safety Guidelines, and clean work area.
   
B.15%Maintain the Existing Quality Assurance Program
1.Perform quality control checks on instruments, including spikes, method blanks, and internal standards.
2.Perform EPA and Organic Chemistry unit quality control samples.
   
C.10%Adapt Literature Methodology and Develop Methods for Organic Chemical Analysis to Meet Laboratory Needs
1.Review literature methods.
2.Adapt literature methods to appropriate laboratory procedure.
   

Knowledge and Skills

  1. Knowledge of chemistry (organic, inorganic, quantitative, qualitative, and instrumental).
  2. Knowledge of organic chemical analysis of environmental samples for organic chemical contamination such as pesticides, PCB congeners, volatile organic chemicals, PAHs, PBDEs, endocrine disrupters, pharmaceuticals, and others.
  3. Knowledge of the principles of packed and capillary column gas/liquid chromatography utilizing a variety of instrument detectors.
  4. Knowledge of the operation of gas, liquid, and gel permeation chromatographs, detectors, autosamplers, concentrators, computers, and their peripherals.
  5. Knowledge of the routine maintenance of gas, liquid, and gel permeation chromatographs, detectors, autosamplers, concentrators, computers, and their peripherals.
  6. Knowledge of laboratory quality control, including statistical data reduction.
  7. Knowledge and ability to clearly present scientific information in a variety of situations.
  8. Knowledge of EPA methods pertaining to organic chemical analysis.
  9. Knowledge of Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources' regulations pertaining to organic chemical analysis.
  10. Knowledge of the safe handling of chemicals, reagents, glassware, and instruments.
