Position Summary

This position will perform Animal Technician duties with increasing levels of independence at the School of Veterinary Medicine's Animal Resource Center (ARC). The ARC is a large, complex research and instructional animal facility housing a wide variety of species (including, but not limited to: cows, goats, sheep, mice, rats, pigs, ponies, calves, gerbils, rabbits, cats, dogs, ground squirrels, parrots, snakes and iguanas, colonies of transgenic mice and rats, and varied wildlife). The ARC consists of four separate animal holding facilities accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC). All animal care is provided in accordance with SOP's, "Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals" and research/instructional protocols.

The incumbent maintains accreditation standards, provides for the physical well being of research and instructional animals (both small and large animals), and perform tasks in animal areas involving recordkeeping, cleaning, feeding, and general care. Position requires the ability to work with all species of animals and the ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds on a regular basis. Employe will be able to work cooperatively with the supervisor and higher level Animal Technicians and be willing and able to receive and follow instructions as necessary. Participates in educational advancement programs required by the employer. May be required to participate (on a rotational basis) in weekend coverage. This position functions under the limited supervision of a Laboratory Animal Supervisor.

 

Goals and Worker Activities

A.65%Follow established policies, procedures and practices. Perform lab animal care duties and monitor health of assigned animals, including weekend and holiday rotations.
1.Feed and water both large and small animal species as directed.
2.Clean, disinfect cages, rooms, stalls, pens, and stanchions.
3.Continuously observe animals under his/her care.
4.Record and report to supervisor any abnormal animal behavior or mishandling.
5.Dispose of manure, bedding, garbage and animal carcasses in proper manner.
6.Perform animal care duties for various species of animals housed in Biosafety Levels 2 and 3 animal containment according to SOP's.
7.Oversee work of student and LTE employees as needed.
8.Notify the proper personnel of problems related to animal health or physical plant when on weekend coverage.
9.Able to handle feed and bedding weighing 50 pounds.
   
B.25%Maintain appropriate records for assigned areas.
1.Responsible for maintaining animal health records.
2.Perform animal census in assigned area.
3.Prepare daily animal health check reports.
4.Maintain working knowledge of ARC policy and standard operational procedures.
   
C.5%Provide assistance to principal investigators on research and teaching projects.
1.Restrain large and small animals.
2.Collect blood, urine and fecal samples of assigned animals under supervision.
3.Administer vaccinations and medications per instructions.

1.Operate cage washer and autoclave.
2.Unload semi-loads of hay and bedding.
3.Unload animal feed from trucks.
4.Make minor repairs to automatic watering devices.
5.Check departmental vehicles and equipment for proper operating condition.
6.Must be able to operate and maintain following departmental equipment: forklift, bobcat, lawn tractor, floor scrubber, pick-up truck, van (used in transporting animals and equipment), pick-up truck with stock trailer or dumpbed.
   

Knowledge and Skills

  1. Knowledge to recognize animal health problems.
  2. Knowledge to interpret and follow written and oral instructions pertaining to research projects and animal management.
  3. Requires manual dexterity to perform technical tasks.
  4. Requires ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
