| A. | 60% | Provision of lead worker responsibility. |
| | 1. | Oversee daily work of Laboratory Animal Technician 2 (LAT-2) and/or and Laboratory Animal Technician 1 (LAT-1), LTEs and students for colony of 2,200-2,300 mice in Zoology Research animal facility. Oversee and direct LATs, LTEs and student workers in absence of Animal Care Supervisor and on week-end and holiday rotations. |
| | 2. | Train and delegate LAT-1 and/or LAT-2, LTEs, students and research staff in care and handling of mice used in this facility. |
| | 3. | Train and delegate LAT-1 and/or LAT-2, LTEs, students and research staff in the proper operation of cage and rack washers, and autoclave to assure sterile cages, cage covers and water bottles. |
| | 4. | In the absence of Lab Animal Supervisor, monitor all Department of Zoology facilities (Zoology Research, Birge Hall and Noland Hall) and report problems to researchers and faculty. Report any problems with heating and ventilation to Physical Plant or Zoology Department Building Manager. Resolve and verify that problems or issues are corrected before leaving the facility. |
| | 5. | Feed and water animals as per instructions of researchers. |
| | 6. | Clean or autoclave all animal equipment according to their specifications or protocol specifications. Animal equipment includes but is not limited to: cages, racks, boxes, box lids, water bottles, stoppers and sipper tubes. |

| B. | 20% | Maintenance of animal care records. |
| | 1. | Maintain protocol file for each researcher and see that current protocol numbers are posted on room doors. |
| | 2. | Provide and post checksheets for daily compliance as required by RARC and USDA. |
| | 3. | Check each incoming animal shipment to be certain health records are enclosed. |
| | 4. | Set up mouse boxes with new ID card per box, or for each animal if individual names are identified. |
| | 5. | Indicate any health problems on ID card at time of observation and report to researcher. |
| | 6. | Indicate special diet or water requirements on ID tag and keep office record. |
| | 7. | Verify compliance as required by RARC and USDA by dating and initialing daily the checksheets for each group of animals on the various protocols. |
| | 8. | When experiments are over, retain and file all health records for future reference as required by RARC and USDA.. |

| C. | 10% | Compliance of University, State, and Federal regulations. |
| | 1. | Ensure current rules and guidelines for RARC and USDA are maintained. |
| | 2. | Check all animals at least once every 24 hours, noting health status, food, water, etc.,. Monitor supplies and conditions that require immediate attention such as wet bedding or low food/water supplies. Verify compliance as required by RARC, USDA, and AAALAC by dating and initialing the checksheet daily for each group of animals on the various protocols. |
| | 3. | Ascertain by dating and initialing the check-sheet daily that caging is clean and in good repair, that the room is clean and well maintained and that the temperature and humidity range is acceptable. The temperature and humidity are to be recorded daily. Verify compliance as required by RARC and USDA by dating and initialing the check-sheet daily for each group of animals on the various protocols. |
| | 4. | Verify that rooms with special light cycles are operating properly, and that all other rooms are in compliance with current light/dark period recommendations. Verify compliance as required by RARC, USDA, and AAALAC by dating and initialing the checksheet daily for each group of animals on the various protocols. |

| D. | 5% | Ordering of supplies and equipment. |
| | 1. | Have direct knowledge of appropriate food, bedding and caging needs of all species of Zoology Department research animals. |
| | 2. | Maintain familiarity with vendors for items needed for research animals. |
| | 3. | Prepare specifications, get prices, determine quantities and using knowledge of product shelf life, order necessary supplies. |
| | 4. | Keep inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment. Stock cleaner for sinks and cages, bacterial floor soap, cage washing detergent, and the necessary brushes, brooms and mops. |
| | 5. | Prepare and fill all orders to the Departmental stock room for cleaning cloths, water bottles and stoppers, rubber gloves and aprons and lab coat when replacement is necessary. Arrange with stockroom for weekly cleaning of animal care lab coats. |

| E. | 5% | Provision of daily animal health checks |
| | 1. | Inspect all animals daily for evidence of disease, skin problems, abnormal behavior or injury. Verify compliance as required by RARC and USDA by dating and initialing the daily checksheet for each group of animals on the various protocols. Report directly to researcher and determine corrective actions. |
| | 2. | Administer treatments or medications as directed by RARC veterinarian or PI when indicated. Verify compliance as required by RARC and USDA by dating and initialing the daily check-sheet for each group of animals on the various protocols. |
