This position may occasionally be asked to work hours in excess of the normal work shift.

Job Summary:This position is responsible for assisting with the manufacture of all products made at the Babcock Hall dairy plant. The incumbent also cleans processing equipment, floors and walls as directed by the supervisor. He/she unloads trucks and moves stock between storage rooms and the production plant. .

 

Goals and Worker Activities

A.55%Production Assistant
1.Assist with the production of fluid milk products, cheese, ice cream, yogurt, sour cream and other dairy products.
2.Perform line duties on the ice cream production lines as directed by the supervisor or a food production assistant.
3.Cut and wrap cheese as directed.
4.Assemble three gallon ice cream containers as needed.
5.Fill ice cream containers as directed.
6.Move finished ice cream containers between various freezers and stock freezer shelves as directed.
7.Unload the milk case conveyer and organize the finished milk cooler as directed by the supervisor.
8.Assemble orders of finished products for wholesale customers and assist with loading the delivery trucks.
9.Unload finished milk products from other suppliers and move to coolers as directed.
10.Perform other production-related activities as directed by the supervisor.
   
B.25%Cleaning and Sanitation Activities
1.Manually clean and sanitize the exterior of processing equipment and tanks as directed by the supervisor.
2.Wash floors using power equipment and manually as necessary.
3.Wash and sanitize walls in the dairy plant and plant coolers and warm rooms.
4.Sweep floors and maintain clean and neat appearance of stock rooms.
5.Flatten cardboard boxes and store properly for recycling.
6.Move trash from the dairy plant to the dumpster daily.
7.Perform other cleaning and sanitizing activities as directed by the supervisor.
   
C.15%Stock Handling
1.Unload raw materials from trucks as needed.
2.Move raw materials to proper storage rooms using manual and power equipment.
3.Organize and rotate inventory in stock rooms as directed by the supervisor.
4.Move materials from stock rooms to the dairy plant as needed.
5.Move finished goods to appropriate coolers and freezers as directed by supervisor or food production assistant.
6.Move finished materials and prepare orders for shipment as directed.
7.Drive refrigerated truck as needed. Load and deliver cases of processed food items from dairy plant to residence halls. uions, UW Hospital and other state agencies. Lock and secure truck and loading docks. Refuel truck and perform minor preventative maintenance. Report any other mechanical deficiencies to the supervisor for appropriate actions.
   
D.5%Miscellaneous
1.Perform other dairy production, cleaning, stocking, and retail sales activities related to the Babcock Hall dairy plant program as directed by the supervisor.
   

Knowledge and Skills

  1. Knowledge of dairy plant operating procedure.
  2. Knowledge of the operation of dairy plant cleaning systems, controls and chemicals.
  3. Ability to follow directions and report non-standard or unusual events.
  4. Knowledge of the responsibility required of individuals working directly with food.
  5. Physical strength and stamina to perform required work: ability to bend, stoop and work on feet for long periods of time.
  6. Trustworthy with public and private property.
  7. Willingness to accept supervisor's directions.
  8. Knowledge of basic safety precautions including precaution in the use of caustic and toxic chemicals and methods of lifting heavy objects.
  9. Willing to perform repetitive and/or non-routine tasks.
  10. Reliable and dependable to maintain efficient work pattern.
  11. Aptitude to learn from oral or written instructions.
  12. Acceptable attitude towards students, faculty, guests and co-workers.
