Job Summary:This is an advanced level position requiring extensive technical knowledge, skill and independence of action in support of the daily operational needs of the Large Animal and Operating Room Areas of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH). Position responsibilities require the individual to demonstrate initiative and the ability to make independent discretionary judgments with respect to both instructional and technical responsibilities. Requires the ability to lift a minimum of 50lbs. independently and physical and manual dexterity to perform specialized technical tasks. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

1) Oversees and assures that high quality nursing care is administered and maintained in the primary care of animal patients.
2) Participates in instruction of veterinary students and training of veterinary technicians.
3) Monitors veterinary student participation in daily receiving/operating schedules, initiates changes and lends assistance when needed.
4) Assists supervisor in problem-solving activities and administrative tasks.
5) Participates and understands the importance of working as a team member within the hospital structure (i.e. communication with supervisors and faculty for enhancing productivity and quality patient care).
6) Demonstrates good interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate proposed ideas and solutions.

The work is performed under general direction.

 

Goals and Worker Activities

A.25%Responsible for providing assistance to Clinical Faculty in Large Animal Area during procedures and primary care. Independently oversees and/or directs professional veterinary students and new technical staff in patient care responsibilities. Proficiently performs technical and nursing skills as needed.
1.Demonstrates and provides instruction in medical nursing skills, techniques, procedures (e.g. abdominocentesis, catheter placement).
2.Restrains varied domestic, special species.
3.Administers and prepares prescribed medications.
4.Participates in and oversees receiving and discharging of patients including loading and unloading
5.Monitors and records all necessary patient data for concise, accurate medical records.
6.Oversees and ensures that hospital forms/records information is complete for billing purposes.
7.Initiates and oversees nursing needs of patients; frequently observes animals under care, records and reports to clinician/supervisor any animals displaying abnormal or concerning behavior.
8.8. Provides assistance and instruction in area of specialization to include: a)prepares and sets?up for procedure, checking equipment prior to use, b) initiates and assists in any necessary patient preparation, c) monitors procedural techniques for aseptic breaks and concerns, d) is available for retrieval of supplies during procedure, e) follows?through with cleaning and maintenance of equipment, ensuring proper usage and care, f) cleans area after procedure and replenishes supplies, g) possesses skill in CPR techniques.
   
B.20%Independently oversees and/or directs professional veterinary students and new technical staff in Operating Room Area in patient care and area responsibilities. Proficiently performs technical and nursing skills as needed.
1.Performs and/or provides instruction in area responsibilities and guidelines according to outlined area procedures. Provides instruction on importance of adhering to established guidelines and procedures with effect to quality care. Instructs on the need to maintain high quality aseptic standards in all aspects of OR function.
2.Restrains and prepares surgical patients of varied domestic, exotic and wildlife species.
3.Performs surgical set-up and clean-up responsibilities.
4.Initiates and oversees surgical nursing skills and responsibilities in the area such as, patient preps, circulating and surgical assisting, monitoring asepsis and maintaining surgical suite communication.
5.Initiates and performs Central Supply related responsibilities.
6.Monitors and performs area and hospital recordkeeping responsibilities (i.e. surgical patients and area, Central Supply).
7.Responsible for providing assistance to clinical faculty during procedures and primary care.

C.10%Contributes to the instructional needs of the teaching hospital.
1.Directs veterinary students and technical trainees in daily, anticipated work flow in area.
2.Conducts and participates in verbal orientation of area to students at rotation changes.
3.Exhibits effective use of technical and organizational skills in instruction.
4.Reinforces guidelines or protocol established for area with veterinary students, faculty, and staff (i.e. dress code, isolation guidelines, patient care protocol and techniques).
5.Provides feedback for veterinary student evaluations.
6.Effectively copes with unanticipated problems and suggesting methods of correction or prevention.
   
D.10%Works in conjunction with faculty to establish needs and criteria for client or instructional aids in area of specialization.
1.Presents ideas and suggestions to faculty.
2.Initiates follow through to establish handouts, reference material or visual aids, (i.e., home care handouts, disease processes, procedures and technique reference materials).
3.Provides instruction to clients and students associated with handouts and reference materials.
4.Revises and updates established instructional materials as needed.
   
E.10%Responsible for participating in special projects, area problem-solving activities and administrative tasks.
1.Formulates written procedures, protocol and informational materials.
2.Investigates new ideas and suggested solutions.
3.Demonstrates initiative and follow through with area responsibilities; ensures high quality work standard and general hospital cleanliness is maintained.
4.Demonstrates effective use of communication skills to address and resolve area problems (with peers, students, faculty, and administration).
5.Compiles area log data in useful format for legal reference; oversees area inventory data and records.
6.Monitors use and initiates proper billing of supplies.
7.Stresses and ensures proper accounting of supplies within the VMTH: recommends ideas to reduce costs and maintain security of supplies.
8.Participates in procedural cost-analyses and fee revisions.
   
F.10%Responsible for equipment maintenance, repair and ordering and review of facility maintenance needs in area.
1.Initiates requisitions, RMI's and investigates new equipment background information prior to submitting requests.
2.Performs troubleshooting tasks and needed repairs on instruments, machines and equipment in area.
3.Notifies clinician or supervisor of needed repairs, equipment failures, and safety hazards; initiates inquiries and service appointments for repairs.
4.Ensures adherence to proper maintenance schedules and procedures by maintaining check and balance system; oversees daily cleaning and care of equipment in area.
5.Establishes needed service contracts and participates in reviews of contact renewals and changes for equipment in the area.
6.Recommends ideas to reduce costs and maintain security of equipment.
7.Reviews and assists in prioritizing needed maintenance, safety and remodeling requests for area; submits requests and follows through to resolve facility maintenance problems.
   
G.10%Oversees hospital area and general facility maintenance.
1.Initiates requisitions, RMI's and investigates new equipment background information prior to submitting requests.
2.Performs troubleshooting tasks and needed repairs on instruments, machines and equipment in area
3.Notifies clinician or supervisor of needed repairs, equipment failures, and safety hazards; initiates inquiries and service appointments for repairs
4.Ensures adherence to proper maintenance schedules and procedures by maintaining check and
5.Establishes needed service contracts and participates in reviews of contract renewals and changes for equipment in the area.
6.Recommends ideas to reduce costs and maintain security of equipment.
7.Reviews and assists in prioritizing needed maintenance, safety and remodeling requests for area; submits requests and follows-through to resolve facility maintenance problems.
   
H.5%Participates in technical and support duties as assigned:
1.In all areas of the VMTH in both animal contact and non-animal related duties (e.g. Medical records, Reception area, Central Supply, Pharmacy, Clinical Pathology).
2.Teaching and research laboratories (to include assisting and organization responsibilities).
3.Provides flex assistance in alternative technical area rotations (possess basic skill proficiency in other areas).
4.Working flexible, on-call hours and variable shifts.
   

Knowledge and Skills

  1. Knowledge of standards for quality animal nursing care and proper procedures associated with small and large animal patients.
  2. Knowledge of complications associated with pre- and post-operative care; appropriate reactions to and requirements for each complication.
  3. Knowledge of proper pre-operative patient preparation and positioning.
  4. Knowledge of aseptic principles and materials reprocessing techniques.
  5. Knowledge of anesthesia techniques and principles.
  6. Knowledge of equipment set-up/maintenance and instruments used in utilized in Small and Large Animal Areas.
  7. Knowledge of client relations, history taking, management and maintenance of legal medical records.
  8. Knowledge of inventory, record keeping and billing procedures utilized in a veterinary hospital.
  9. Ability to function calmly in stressful, life and death situations.
