Custodial Department, 2nd Shift, Crew 216,Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery (WID), Monday-Friday, 6:00 p.m-2:30 a.m., 30 minute unpaid break each day.

Job Summary:This position performs a variety of custodial tasks required in the routine cleaning and maintenance of university buildings that include custodial tasks in laboratory/research settings for the majority of the time. Moderately heavy physical effort is required for some tasks such as scrubbing, emptying rubbish containers, moving furniture and equipment, etc. Occasional unscheduled overtime may be required for snow removal and/or emergency cleanup.

Work is performed under the guidance of a Custodial Services Supervisor. This position is required to be able to independently perform work, without on-site supervision in laboratory/research settings. The consequence of error due to actions or decisions made during the cleaning and maintenance of laboratory/research settings, could pose a major risk to safety, equipment, and could result in a substantial risk to millions of dollars and years worth of research done by the University and could delay the development of new medical techniques, engineering technologies, and other benefits of cutting edge research that affect millions of people nation wide. Based upon this risk, these positions require employees be able to speak, read, write and understand verbal instructions in English.

Goals and Worker Activities

A.95%Cleaning and Maintenance of University Buildings, includin laboratory/research settings.
1.Routinely care for floors, which includes dust mopping, damp mopping, wet mopping, scrubbing with automatic floor scrubber, vacuuming, sweeping (either manually or with a machine), and repair of floor finish.
2.Periodically care for floors, which includes scrubbing with rotary machine, stripping and refinishing, machine shampooing of carpet, and sealing of wood floors and concrete.
3.Remove trash and litter.
4.Clean wash bowls, toilet bowls, urinals, and showers.
5.Replenish supplies of towels, soap and toilet paper.
6.Clean mirrors, ledges and partitions.
7.Mop or sweep floor.
8.Clean chalkboards, vacuum erasers, and replace chalk.
9.Replace fluorescent lights and incandescent bulbs.
10.Dust, vacuum, wash, and polish furniture and equipment.
11.Vacuum shelves, ventilators, radiators, stairs, etc.
12.Close windows and doors.
13.Clean door and partition glass.
14.Lock or unlock doors as scheduled or directed.
15.Police public areas for trash and litter.
16.Wash waste receptacles.
17.Operate water vacuum to clean up floods.
18.Wash tile walls.
19.Report needed building repairs.
20.Report security violations and/or suspicious activity
21.Report building system malfunctions.
22.Remove posters, papers, and notices from prohibited areas.
23.Provide assistance for university functions.
24.Perform additional tasks as directed.
   
B.5%Outside Work
1.Clean entrance mats.
2.Remove trash / litter and sweep debris from entrance areas and plaza areas.
3.Remove snow and ice from walks and steps to main sidewalk.
4.Salt or sand areas of ice on entrance walks and steps.
5.Move supplies and/or equipment between buildings as assigned.
6.Peform additional tasks as directed.
   

Knowledge and Skills

  1. Work Performed: Dust mopping and wet mopping floors and halls. Physical Demands: Mop buckets are normally 32-quart size. When filled 2/3 full of water they will weigh approximately 50 lbs. Must be able to lift/carry buckets filled to 2/3 capacity. Mopping requires considerable movement of arms, twisting and bending of back.
  2. Work Performed: Manually, or by machine, strip floor finish and apply new floor finish. Physical Demands: Application of floor finish is similar to mopping demands. Operation of electric floor buffers involves considerable twisting of back. Must be capable of carrying 5 gallon cans of floor finish weighing approximately 47 lbs.
  3. Work Performed: Scrub bathroom sinks, toilets, fixtures, floors and walls. Wash inside of windows and ceilings. Physical Demands: Duties require frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, and use of arms above shoulder level. Frequent exposure to cleaning solutions, disinfectants and chemicals some which have strong odors. May be required to work from a stepladder.
  4. Work Performed: Operate industrial vacuum cleaners and carpet extractors. Physical Demands: Considerable movement of arms and torso. "Backpack" vacuums, weighing approximately 15 lbs. are used on stairways.
  5. Work Performed: Move supplies, furniture, file cabinets, tables and other equipment. Physical Demands: Carts or dollies available for moving some desks and equipment. Requires lifting, bending and twisting. Other supples, furniture and items must be moved by hand. Some boxes of supplies weigh approximately 55 lbs., and can be as large as 22" X 18" X 19".
  6. Work Performed: Pick up waste paper and recycling from offices, classrooms, labs and empty into outdoor rubbish containers. Physical Demands: Bending, squatting and twisting required to pick up paper and items from floor and from under furniture. Full waste cans (some which may be heavy) must be emptied into carts. Paper pick-up cart weighs approximately 50-60 lbs. when filled with paper. Cart must be lifted and emptied into a large rubbish container which is about 48? above ground level.
  7. Work Performed: Climb ladders and replace light bulbs. Physical Demands: Agility is required to climb stepladder and work with hands above head. Six, eight and ten-foot stepladders are most common sizes in use.
  8. Work Performed: Snow and ice removal from steps and sidewalks. Physical Demands: Hand shoveling of snow from steps and entryways. Requires lifting, bending and twisting. May be required to operate a snow blower. Must be able to work in winter weather conditions.
  9. Work Performed: Cleaning and dusting floors, furniture, doors, radiators, desks, windowsills, chalkboards, etc. Physical Demands: Exposure to dirt, dust, and chalk dust.
  10. The majority of the employees in these classifications are employed on the second and third shifts. This requires an individual who can adjust to the changes in eating and sleeping schedules.
  11. Most work is performed indoors. However some assignments require going from building to building, and the employe may be exposed to inclement weather (rain, snow, heat, cold, etc.).
  12. Must be able to understand oral and written work assignments and safety instructions.
  13. Must have the ability to work alone performing duties in assigned area (floor/building).
  14. Some work assignments involve cleaning in laboratory or medical-type buildings.
