Job Summary:This is a professional-level position on the Communications Team of University Health Services.

The Web and Publications Editor helps to create and maintain a variety of print and web-based communication campaigns and materials that promote healthy student behaviors and inform UW Madison students about UHS services and programs.

The Web and Publications Editor writes and edits materials including press releases, news alerts, student emails, advertisements, signs, posters, brochures, and online content that supports health information distribution to the Madison campus and communication within the organization. This position also works as part of the Communications Team to plan strategies for improving the health of campus, meets with internal and external clients regarding specific event or campaign material development, and works to improve internal communication production systems.

This position is highly involved with UHSs web-based communication, including coordinating all updates to the internal and external websites and designing, creating, and maintaining webpages. The successful candidate will have an understanding of the basics of website design and management, including familiarity with Dreamweaver, CSS and HTML.

This position is also responsible for managing UHSs presence on social networking sites, including leading distribution of all social media-related content, monitoring online conversations, developing and driving events, promotions and incentives, and suggesting and implementing other relevant social media programs.

 

Goals and Worker Activities

A.40%Develop and review content for UHS websites. Design, create, and maintain webpages for UHS websites
1.Write, edit and proof stories; link to forms and news stories; upload photos; create simple graphics, etc. Develop content and adapt preexisting print materials to website. Update web stories as needed.
2.Design, create and maintain webpages for Internet and Intranet.
3.Convert and load audio, photos, videos, and other media resources onto the web.
4.Serve as the managing editor of the Intranet, responding to requests for content posting, as well as soliciting and publishing material to create a dynamic and useful Intranet for all staff.
5.Manage social media campaigns and day-to-day activities. Analyze and evaluate social media programs and report on effectiveness of campaigns. Stay up-to-date on new tools and best practices.
6.Prepare quality charts, graphs, and figures for presentations and web.
7.Design online surveys, quizzes and forms for use in web pages.
   
B.40%Create and distribute electronic and print marketing materials that promote UHS services and programs
1.Write, edit, and proofread news releases, brochures, flyers, bookmarks, student emails, posters, ads, social media messages, etc. Collaborate with other communications staff, clinicians, prevention specialists and others in the development of content.
2.Provide imaging, design and page layout support of posters, signs, brochures and other marketing materials as needed.
3.Manage event and presentation material development.
4.Work with other team members to complete projects and event material in published form.
5.Continue to develop and improve UHS's system for distributing materials by tracking requests and seeking out new avenues for distribution.
6.Write and edit content that appears in other UW Madison publications describing and promoting UHS.
7.Write, edit and produce health and wellness video communications.
   
C.20%Assist in planning communication and prevention campaigns and organizational events with the purpose of increasing the health of the campus community.
1.Meet with student groups (such as PAVE, Sex Out Loud and the Kinesiology Club) regarding UHS Communications assistance to their annual events.
2.Participate in UHS Communications Team meetings and generate creative concepts for new projects.
3.Represent UHS at outreach events by staffing resource tables and answering student questions.
4.Manage email, phone and outreach contacts with students, faculty/staff, media and other external audiences.
   

Knowledge and Skills

  5. Experience with creative campaigns; a grasp of best practices for marketing to particular audiences

  7. Highly accurate copyediting and proofreading, including ability to follow and contribute to standard stylebooks
  8. Demonstrated knowledge of social platforms and tools
  9. Knowledge of Adobe CS5 components in particular, InDesign, Photoshop, and Dreamweaver
  10. Ability to create and maintain websites using Dreamweaver, CSS and HTML
  11. Familiarity with principles of user-friendly website organization and design, including accessibility
  12. Background or interest in communicating health messages is preferred
