Assistant Professor of History of Science
Degree and area of specialization:
Ph.D. in History of Science, History, Science and Technology Studies or closely related discipline Specialization in the history of modern physical sciences. Relevant areas of specialization include the history of physics, chemistry, earth and atmospheric sciences, astronomy, climatology, and similar physical sciences of the laboratory or the field.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Teaching experience preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with strong records in teaching and research in the history of modern physical sciences. Candidates should demonstrate evidence of creativity, productivity, and excellence in the history of modern physical sciences.
The candidate will be expected to actively engage in the intellectual life of a faculty with diverse interests, as well as embrace departmental commitments to undergraduate and graduate education and engage in significant ongoing research. The candidate will also be expected to perform appropriate service to the department and university and public outreach.
As a member of the Department of the History of Science, the successful candidate
will be expected to advance research and teaching in the historical, social, and cultural
dimensions of modern physical science, roughly 1750-present. Further, the candidate will be
expected to strengthen history of science more broadly at UW-Madison by promoting interdisciplinary
synergy between History of Science and other relevant programs in the humanities, social sciences,
and natural sciences.
