Degree and area of specialization:
Ph.D. in History of Science, Science and Technology Studies, History, or closely related discipline, with a specialization in the history of recent life sciences.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Teaching experience preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with strong records in teaching and research in the history of recent life sciences.
Principal duties:
As a member of the Department of the History of Science, the successful candidate will help to
advance research and teaching in the historical, political, cultural, and ethical dimensions of
recent life science (extending back to the mid-twentieth century). UW-Madison has a long history
with significant strengths in the life sciences--from biochemistry to evo-devo, from regenerative
biology to neuroscience. The candidate will contribute to strengthening the humanities at the UW by
drawing on historical perspectives and promoting interdisciplinary synergy within the humanities in
ways that engage critically with the recent life sciences.
Applicants should hold a
doctorate or anticipate its completion by the time of the appointment.
Candidates should
demonstrate evidence of creativity and excellence in the history of recent life science.
The
ideal candidate will actively engage in the intellectual life of a faculty with diverse interests,
as well as embrace departmental commitments to undergraduate and graduate education and engage in
significant ongoing research.
The candidate is also expected to perform departmental,
university and community services as
appropriate
