The successful candidate will be an accomplished scientist with a strong record of academic and administrative leadership. Special emphasis will be given to experience in both graduate student and medical student education, the mentoring of junior faculty, and a sustained record of extramural research funding. The successful candidate will have an exciting vision for the future of biochemical research, education and training in a leading academic medical center. Candidates must have academic credentials for a tenured faculty appointment at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Principal duties:
Scholarly activities appropriate to the faculty rank. Act as chairperson of the department with
senior administrative responsibility for the department, including medical student and graduate
education, research programs, and service to the University and the public.
As a leader
designated by the dean and department executive committee to serve as the department's chief
executive officer, a School of Medicine and Public Health department chair is accountable for the
following managerial responsibilities, as listed in Faculty Policies of the University of
Wisconsin-Madison (FPP) Section 5.31:
A. Serves as the official channel of communications
for all matters affecting the department as a
whole between the department and chancellor,
the dean, other officials, or departments.
B. Calls meetings of the departmental faculty and of
the executive committee and presides over
the meetings. He/She shall call a meeting at the
request of any two members of the
department. Each department shall meet at least once
every semester.
C. Has charge of all official correspondence of the department and of all
departmental
announcements in the catalogue or other University publications.
D.
Determines that all necessary records of teaching, research and public service of the
department are properly kept and are always accessible to the proper authorities.
E. Reports to
the dean regarding the activities and needs of the department.
F. Has responsibility for all
departmental supplies.
G. Submits new courses, major revisions of existing courses, and deletion
of courses proposed by
the department for action by the divisional executive committee and
by the dean.
H. Takes action in case of emergency pending a meeting of the department of its
executive
committee.
I. In general, acts as the executive of the Department.
In
addition, SMPH department chairs are expected to provide strong leadership to ensure that the
following responsibilities are achieved/fulfilled
1. Chairs are responsible for
establishing and maintaining the appropriate balance and high
quality of the academic
department in all areas of department's mission: teaching, research
and service. They are
accountable for medical student education within the department and
for cooperating with
interdisciplinary programs, established and proposed, with other
departments both within and
outside the Medical School.
2. Chairs are responsible for accomplishing department-related
objectives of the Medical School
Strategic Plan, for achieving selected performance targets
established by the dean with the
chair, and for serving on Medical School and UW committees
and panels.
3. In accordance with University policies and the diversity goals and objectives
stated in the
Medical School Strategic Plan, chairs are responsible for proactively
supporting recruitment of
female and ethnic minority faculty to meet Medical School
diversity goals. They are expected
to assure a gender friendly environment and gender pay
equity for all faculty.
4. Chairs are responsible for facilitating the career development of
junior faculty within the
department. This includes providing sufficient start-up resources
for all junior faculty and
establishing and implementing an appropriate mentor policy.
Chairs are also responsible for
ensuring that the executive committee accomplishes timely
performance appraisals, promotion
reviews and post-promotion
reviews.
