Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
1 year of experience coordinating pre-college academic programs, cultural activities, workshops,
seminars and group activities in higher education.
Preferred work experience: After school
and summer program administration, teaching, and/or academic guidance experience. Recruiting,
selecting and mentoring elementary, middle and high school minority disadvantaged students.
Experience working with elementary, middle and high school age students from a spectrum of
cultural, economic, linguistic and ethnic backgrounds. Experience working with public school staff
and community groups. Ability to develop effective partnerships and collaborative efforts between
groups, agencies and departments. Knowledge of issues of equity and diversity in educational
settings and awareness of issues affecting low-income and minority school children. Excellent
interpersonal skills, oral and written skills, organizational skills and the ability to exercise
initiative when necessary and appropriate. Group facilitation
skills.
Principal duties:
Independently develop and present oral presentations to recruit student applicants from throughout
the State of Wisconsin (Madison, Milwaukee, Racine, Waukesha, Bad River, Ho-Chunk, Lac Courte
Oreilles, Lac du flambeau and Menominee Indian Nations), Instructional Staff, Teaching Assistants,
Tutors and Dorm Counselors.
Develop and independently administer and /or coordinated
educational enrichment programs, activities, orientations, training sessions and other projects for
student program participants such as: parents, instructional staff, campus departments, student
organizations, public school partners. (Principals, guidance counselors, minority service
representatives, and public school district teachers) and community partners.
Communicate
with campus and community partners to secure internship instructors and placements, assign
students, job coach, and problem solve student and/or internship partner issues accordingly.
Interview, select and supervise teaching assistants, tutors, and dorm counselors and oversee
student dorm and campus life experiences. Prepare students for participation in special events,
leadership opportunities, scholarship competitions and transport and escort students on field trips
and community service projects. Supervise UW Madison college student mentors, volunteers, and
community service project participants who work with PEOPLE Precollege students. Work with PEOPLE
Parent and Community Volunteer Councils.
Responsible for independently developing,
implementing, and supervising various components of precollege programs including: distance,
commuter and residential precollege programs. Supervise graduate and undergraduate PEOPLE staff
members and provide guidance on the daily operations of PEOPLE after school tutorial and
enrichment sites, Academic Centers for Enrichment (ACE), which are currently operated 4 days per
week, 3:00-6:00 pm at various locations throughout the city of Madison including: on campus (1), at
local high schools (4), and community neighborhood centers (2). Identify site specific needs,
Develop and communicate educational plans and service needs of individual students to parents and
ACE staff members, monitor provision of quality service to completion. Lead staff meeting and
prepare monthly administrative reports. Plan, develop, and implement cohort meetings and other
academic, social, and cultural outreach events in communities throughout the state of
Wisconsin.
Serve as key academic planner and guidance counselor for designated schools,
students, and parents. Independently meet with principals, guidance counselors, students, parents,
teachers, and ACE site staff members on a regular basis. Ensure compliance with school agreements
on a daily basis. Conduct guidance conferences along with Academic Leads, parents, school personnel
and students. Independently maintain ongoing oversight and supervision of students and staff to
resolve any site, staff, and/or student issues and concerns. Provide guidance and support on
academic, social, cultural, behavioral, and other areas that positively/negatively impact the
success of students.
Independently review academic student grade reports, provide academic
counseling, develop academic plans, and monitor academic progress. Identify and ensure provision
of student support needs, review attendance, enforce program policies and procedures, determine
consequences and discipline of students. Negotiate and recommend student participation and program
eligibility status, communicate with students, family members, and/or guardians, designated
community organization members, and other key contacts via phone, email and in person at ACE
centers and other community locations.
Serve as language and cultural interpreters and
translators, including written and oral services. Perform other student programming, service
learning, community relations and outreach, and other duties as assigned.
