Degree and area of specialization:
Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Computer Science or Electrical/Computer Engineering, Physics or Biological Sciences.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Candidate must have two or more years experience with Java programming for large distributed software projects. Experience with open source programming and multiple operating system development and deployment is preferred. Excellent communication skills and ability to support users with varying levels of computing expertise is required. Experience with development tools such as CVS, SVN, and additional programming skills in Python and C++ are an advantage. Candidates must have strong debugging skills and must be able to work well in a team environment with minimal supervision.
Principal duties:
The University of Wisconsin is an institution with an international reputation for excellence in
biological imaging. These positions will support the Laboratory for Optical and Computational
Instrumentation (LOCI) and its mission to develop new imaging and visualization approaches for
understanding dynamic biological phenomena. For more information please log on to
http://www.loci.wisc.edu/. These approaches make up an open source image analysis and
visualization toolkit for multidimensional microscopy data. These computational image programmer
positions will work closely with others in a research environment maintaining, expanding, and
writing Java applications for the LOCI image visualization and informatics systems. Specific
responsibilities include: (1) Addition of key features for biological image analysis; (2)
Interfacing with programmers from collaborating groups; (3) working with users to identify new
features and debug existing features; (4) Maintain and expand code documentation.
Additional
responsibilities for this position include: Support users of the image visualization system; work
with system administrators of LOCI for software support of the image visualization system; develop
and present papers and talks on the image visualization system as it pertains to the work of LOCI
and its collaborators; other duties as assigned by the LOCI
