Understanding of the issues and experiences encountered by underrepresented
ethnic/minority and culturally disadvantaged undergraduates on a large, complex, and academically
rigorous university campus.
Relevant experience working with academically outstanding
undergraduates; ability and commitment to meet evening and weekend responsibilities.
Ability
to serve as an effective liaison with diverse faculty, staff, and other academic support
programs.
Commitment to the mission and goals of the University and the Chancellor's and
Powers-Knapp Scholarship Programs.
Principal duties:
The campus-wide, merit-based Chancellor's and Powers-Knapp Scholarship Programs were established to
attract and assist academically outstanding and talented, underrepresented minority and culturally
disadvantaged students. More than 400 scholars are assisted in individual appointments, and in
class and monthly group designed to provide information on institutional opportunities and
resources, encourage participation in informal discussions on contemporary issues and innovative
research with top faculty and staff, develop supportive and intellectually engaging networks,
facilitate interaction and group cohesiveness, and foster intercultural understanding and a sense
of community.
Scholars are organized by classes for the development and enhancement of
leadership and organizational skills, interaction in smaller groups, and planning and
implementation of social and volunteer service activities. Individual appointments are scheduled
with program staff at least twice annually for: basic academic advising and monitoring academic
progress; exploring career goals, aspirations, and other concerns; and identifying additional
experiences for the pursuit of personal and academic excellence.
The Associate Student
Services Coordinator will assist in the overall administration, recruitment, and support activities
for the Chancellor's and Powers-Knapp Scholarship Programs. Responsibilities include basic academic
advising and monitoring, assistance with the clarification of career goals and aspirations,
assistance with overall personal growth and development, and support/advising for complementary
volunteer service and social activities. The position requires strong interpersonal communication
skills as well as a commitment to helping scholars achieve personal and academic excellence through
the development of strong academic, planning, organizational, and leadership skills. The candidate
must also be willing to work evenings and weekends for specific program activities. Much of the
work is of a confidential nature and must be managed accordingly.
Primary Responsibilities:
Assist in the planning and implementation of program activities-including monthly, class,
and other planning meetings.
Provide effective and ongoing advising and personal support for
academic achievement and overall growth.
Make referrals to academic support services and
resources, and provide follow-up as needed.
Assist class organizations, freshmen through
seniors, with development of effective leadership abilities; exploration of critical contemporary
educational, political, and other societal or global issues; the development of supportive peer
relationships; planning and implementation of social and volunteer service activities; and overall
involvement of scholars.
Other duties as assigned.

potential.
