Scientific Programmer
Official title:
SR SYSTEMS PROGRAMMER(T32BN) or SYSTEMS PROGRAMMER(T32DN) or ASSOC SYSTEMS PRGRMMR(T32FN)
Degree and area of specialization:
B.S. required, preferably in Computer Sciences or Electrical/Computer Engineering.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Must have experience in Unix, C/C++, Unix scripting. Some Unix systems administration experience a big plus. Experience developing and maintaining a large software package using C/C++, and/or experience with Unix systems administration, Linux, Windows, Java, and/or scientific computing applications is an advantage but not required given either solid academic or work experience. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills. Must have ability to work well in a team environment and with minimal supervision.
Principal duties:
If advancing the state of the art of distributed computing in an academic environment interests
you, LMCG and the Condor Project at the University of Wisconsin offers you a unique working
environment. Working with Prof. David C. Schwartz and Prof. Miron Livny and their staff, you will
be working at the interface between the Laboratory for Molecular and Computational Genomics (LMCG)
and the Condor Project in the Department of Computer Sciences working on new systems and software
for personal genomics requiring cluster computing. LMCG is a multidisciplinary laboratory working
on the development and application of single molecule techniques for powering the new age of
personal genomics. The Condor Project is a research team of faculty, staff, and students who work
to develop, implement, maintain, support, and deploy current and future versions of Condor, a
distributed resource management system, and other distributed workload management systems
encompassing both scientific and enterprise computing.
**LMCG Activities 50%
-Active
engagement with all other computer science/programmers/information processing consultants,
-Development of overall system architecture
-Oversight of network design and implementation
of changes and new designs, algorithm development and software development
-Communication with
vendors
-Collaboration with funding agencies regarding design of genome analysis
systems
**Condor Project Activities 50%
-Develop, implement, maintain, support and deploy
current and future versions of "Condor" and other distributed workload management systems
encompassing both production computing and research missions
-Interact with LMCG to help install
and utilize Condor Project software tools
-Interact with LMCG researchers on the development of
new distributed computing technologies and software tools
-Work with the rest of the Condor Team
on code development, research including writing papers on results discovered, maintenance, and/or
porting by performing systems-level coding/development in C/C++ using state of the art tools on a
wide variety of computing platforms and operating systems
-Perform some light systems
administration work on Unix and/or
Windows
Additional Information:
Our project's homes are in the UW-Madison Department of Computer Sciences and The
UW-Biotechnology Center (Departments of Chemistry and Genetics), which are all internationally
recognized departments consistently ranked in the top ten across the USA; this position will afford
you the opportunity to interact closely with both department faculty and students to translate
novel ideas into production quality software. The software you will be working on is used by LMCG
scientists and engineers, plus parts used by hundreds of institutions-- from universities to
national laboratories, and from large hi-tech corporations to small animation teams.
Occasional
travel is required.
We don't care if you are about to graduate, just graduated, or have many
years of solid experience; if you are a self-motivator who loves all things related to computing we
want to talk with you!
