Degree and area of specialization:
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited post-secondary institution
License/certification:
Current RID Certification, NAD Certification and/or state quality assurance levels required with higher priority in interviewing RID and NAD certified applicants; completion of comparable assessments will be considered.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Two years or more experience interpreting with individuals who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing, preferably in a postsecondary setting.
Principal duties:
A. Provide direct services:
1. Assess language of consumers and determine optimal linguistic
equivalence. Using consumer and colleague feedback, assess effectiveness of interpretation and
adjust interpretation accordingly.
2. Prepare for academically-related work assignments
through advance preparation of course materials and in consultation with resources including
faculty and student (i.e., become familiar with course syllabi, course content, technical signs,
etc.).
3. Interpret and/or transliterate classroom instruction (lecture, discussion, lab)
and academically related requirements beyond the classroom (i.e., meetings with instructors and
teaching assistants, review sessions, internships, field experiences) in a communication equivalent
most effective for the D/HH individual.
4. Interpret and/or transliterate for the
job-related accommodation of D/HH McBurney staff, visitors, and McBurney Center sponsored
events.
5. Maintain professional standards as delineated in the National Registry of the
Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Ethics, McBurney Center and university
policies.
6. Assist in coordination of interpreter schedules.
B. Communicate with
others in support of team goals and the provision of services:
1. Attend Deaf and Hard of
Hearing Services staff meetings and maintain network with other staff members to enhance the flow
of information critical to quality and consistent service.
2. Provide information to
faculty, staff, and students regarding the interpreting service, communication between deaf and
hearing people, and support service resources.
3. Consult and maintain regular contact with
campus community, specifically faculty and students, to establish rapport and address situational
concerns as they arise.
4. Participate in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services administrative
projects, including committee work and other duties as assigned.
5. Act as mentor and
conduit for information regarding McBurney processes, technical questions and campus issues to
other staff and community-based interpreters.
6. Represent daily the mission of the McBurney
Disability Resource Center to members of the UW-Madison community through work in the mainstream
setting.
7. Demonstrate a commitment to organizational success.
8. Participate in
departmental and division-wide quality improvement efforts.
9. Demonstrate a commitment to
diversity.
10. Other duties as
assigned.
Additional Information:
Pay is commensurate with experience, education, certification and relevant credentials with merit increases and renewable academic appointments. Work will be offered according to scheduling needs, interpreter availability and seniority with potential for becoming a salaried Academic Staff Classroom Interpreter. Eligibility for full university benefits such as health insurance exists depending on type of work
