Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Experience in academic advising or related student service field required. Familiarity with academic programs and how they can relate to various career paths preferred. Qualities sought in applicants include an ability to work effectively as a member of the CCAS team, ease in communicating with faculty and staff, and demonstrated experience in collaborating with other academic units. Ability to work effectively with students is essential. Successful applicants will be able to demonstrate through past experience an ability to work effectively within and for a diverse community in a sensitive and caring manner. Excellent verbal and written skills are essential.
Principal duties:
60% Serve as assigned advisor to a cohort of students, while also advising non-assigned students
on an appointment or drop-in basis.
- Meet with students, working out of the CCAS main office as
well as CCAS residence hall advising offices, at times convenient to students. Some advising will
take place during hours other than 8:00-5:00 Monday-Friday.
- Advise students individually and
in groups about the development of educational plan options, academic requirements, and campus
resources.
- Assist students in assessing their interests, skills, and values as an initial
step toward deciding on academic majors or potential career directions.
- Use knowledge of
course requirements and academic options to help students match their interests and abilities with
appropriate fields of study and career possibilities.
20% Serve as an academic advisor for
incoming freshmen and transfer students at SOAR (Student Orientation, Advising, and
Registration).
10% Maintain records of interaction with students.
10% Participate as a full
member of the CCAS team assisting with administrative and liaison
tasks.
Additional Information:
The Cross-College Advising Service (CCAS) is a university-wide academic advising service for students who are undecided about their major and career options. Although the office focuses primarily on freshmen and sophomores, advising is also offered to students who are in transition from one college to another within UW-Madison. The CCAS advising staff, knowledgeable about all majors on campus, is available to guide students in charting initial academic paths and to help them connect with appropriate advising resources. In addition to providing individual advising, CCAS works collaboratively with schools and colleges to provide an array of academic advising services. CCAS has residence hall advising offices in Bradley, Chadbourne, Ogg, Sellery, and Witte, as well as the main office in Ingraham Hall. CCAS also maintains an Exploration Center, where students have opportunities to use a wide variety of tools to explore career options.
