Degree and area of specialization:

Required: Bachelor's degree

Preferred: Master's degree in a scientific field or in journalism, public relations, marketing, or related field.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Required: At least 5 years experience (beyond degree) managing a communications, media relations, public relations, or social marketing team conveying scientific or technical subjects to wide audiences. Experience must include managing staff and budget. Exceptional writing and editing skills. Demonstrated ability to lead and work with a team of communicators.

Preferred: At least 5 years experience communicating marine, freshwater or environmental science and research in higher education institutions.

Principal duties:

* Manage the UW Aquatic Sciences Center (ASC) communications staff (five at present), projects, and annual budget of $800,000.
* Develop and maintain strategic communications plan, establish goals, set priorities, and oversee progress.
* Develop and coordinate effective communications projects. These may include print publications; Web sites; video productions; radio programs; exhibits/displays; workshops and meetings; media relations and social marketing campaigns; and more.
* Serve as principal investigator on the UW Sea Grant Institute's Communications Office project and co-investigator on the UW Water Resources Institute's Information Transfer project. Serve as co-principal investigator (with Assistant Director for Research and Outreach) on UW Sea Grant's quadrennial work plan. Participate in program reviews and planning activities and assist with program evaluation and reporting obligations to the National Sea Grant Office and the National Institutes for Water Resources.
* Actively participate in developing center long-range plans, policy and administrative guidelines as part of the ASC management team, along with the Director, Assistant Director for Administration & Information, Assistant Director for Research & Outreach, and Finance & Grants Administrator.
* Pursue opportunities to develop special communications projects and secure funding for them.
* Serve as the public information officer and, in the director's absence, media spokesperson for the ASC and its programs.

Additional Information:

Headquartered in the Graduate School on the UW-Madison campus, the University of Wisconsin Aquatic Sciences Center (ASC) administers the Sea Grant Institute and Water Resources Institute, which support multidisciplinary research, education and outreach for the protection and sustainable use of Wisconsin's water resources, together with other funding activities compatible with the ASC mission. This position reports to the Director of ASC.
