Degree and area of specialization:
Bachelor's Degree is required. Accredited court reporting program or broadcast captioning degree preferred.
License/certification:
Current Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) and Certified Real Time Reporter (CRR), and Certified CART Provider (CCP) certifications preferred; competency to receive certification(s) within a reasonable timeline required.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Minimum of two years captioning or real time equivalence experience preferred. Awareness and
comfort in working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing people including knowledge or desire to learn sign
language; working knowledge of disability issues.
Phonetic aptitude for writing real time at
an average minimum speed of 180+ WPM and 95%+ accuracy
rate.
Principal duties:
Reporting to the Lead Captioning Coordinator, the incumbent will provide real time captioning
service in the educational environment through a computer-aided real time medium.
Essential
Job Functions
Provide real time captioning for registered McBurney clients for classroom
instruction (i.e., lecture, discussion and lab) and academically-related requirements beyond the
classroom (i.e., group project, internship, student-instructor meeting); provide edited or unedited
transcripts as needed
Provide real time captioning for the job-related accommodation of deaf and
hard of hearing McBurney staff, visitors, and McBurney sponsored events
Consult and maintain
regular contact with campus community, specifically faculty and student, to establish rapport and
explain real time captioning service
Prepare, maintain and research job-specific terminology for
optimum real time captioning and readability including speaker identification, user-friendly real
time formats and effective dictionary building through advance preparation of course materials and
consultation with resources including faculty and student
Stay abreast of technological
advancements in real time captioning practices and computer equipment including computer
applications, both hardware and software, through a continuous collection of real time resources
(i.e., software options, ideal and compatible steno machine and computer equipment
brands/versions)
Adoption of a consistent, accurate and conflict-free theory and familiarity and
sensitivity to the professional standards of the Court Reporter Bill of Rights as delineated by the
National Court Reporter Association (NCRA), McBurney Center and university policies
Promote and
respect the practice of civility in the workplace;
Demonstrate a commitment to organizational
success
Potential Job Duties
Participate in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services projects,
including committee work and mentoring
Participate in departmental and division-wide quality
improvement efforts
Other duties as
assigned

captioner availability and seniority with potential for becoming a salaried Academic Staff
Classroom Real Time Captioner. Eligibility for full university benefits such as health insurance
exists depending on how many hours
worked.
