Degree and area of specialization:
A bachelor's degree required.
License/certification:
Current C-Print, Typewell, or other speech-to-text notetaking service certificate of completion is required.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Typing speed of 60 words per minute or higher with the ability to understand and summarize
information while typing.
Awareness and comfort in working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing people
including knowledge or desire to learn sign language; working knowledge of disability
issues.
Phonetic aptitude for performing speech-to-text transcription services with the goal of
a verbatim transcript.
Experience in post secondary environment is not necessary but knowledge
of the post-secondary environment is
preferred.
Principal duties:
Reporting to the Lead Captioning Coordinator, the incumbent will provide speech-to-text summation
service in the educational environment through a computer-aided real-time transcription
system.
Essential Job Functions
Provide speech-to-text summation service for registered
McBurney clients for classroom instruction (i.e., lecture, discussion and lab) and
academically-related requirements beyond the classroom (i.e., group project, internship,
student-instructor meeting); provide edited or unedited transcripts as needed.
Provide
speech-to-text summation service for the job-related accommodation of deaf and hard of hearing
McBurney staff, visitor, and McBurney sponsored events.
Consult and maintain regular contact
with campus community, specifically faculty and student, to establish rapport and explain
speech-to-text summation services.
Prepare, maintain and research job-specific terminology for
optimum transcription and readability including speaker identification, user-friendly formats and
effective dictionary building through advance preparation of course materials and consultation with
resources including faculty and student.
Stay abreast of technological advancements in
speech-to-text summation service practices and computer equipment including computer applications,
both hardware and software, through a continuous collection of real time resources (i.e., software
options, ideal and compatible computer equipment brands/versions)
Adoption of a consistent,
accurate and conflict-free theory and familiarity and sensitivity to the professional standards of
the C-Print or Typewell code of ethics delineated by the Speech to Text Service Network, McBurney
Center, and university policies.
Promote and respect the practice of civility in the
workplace.
Demonstrate a commitment to organizational success.
Potential Job
Duties
Participate in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services projects, including committee work and
mentoring.
Participate in departmental and division-wide quality improvement efforts.
Other
duties as
assigned.
Additional Information:
Pay is commensurate with experience, education, certification and relevant
credentials with annual merit increases when approved by legislature, and renewable academic
appointments. Work will be offered according to scheduling needs, captioner availability and
seniority with potential for becoming a salaried Academic Staff Classroom Speech-to-Text Captioner.
Eligibility for full university benefits such as health insurance exists depending on the amount
of hours worked.
