Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in higher education, counseling, advising or related area preferred. Demonstrated bilingual skills in understanding, speaking and reading Spanish
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
*** Three years of experience working in a large university setting with diverse professional staff
and student populations;
*** a demonstrated knowledge and understanding of linguistic, gender
and cultural issues affecting Chican@/Latin@ students in higher education;
*** a working
knowledge of university degree requirements;
*** extended experience in student
advising;
*** a thorough knowledge of Chican@/Latin@ educational and professional organizations
student organizations, and community organizations;
*** extended experience in working at summer
bridge programs;
*** the ability to work collaboratively and with diverse constituencies in
exchanging information and creating strong working relationships;
*** well-developed
communication skills (written, oral, electronic); and
*** a cultural awareness and sensitivity
in working with Chican@/Latin@
students and families in the
community.
Principal duties:
Chican@/Latin@ student Academic Services is housed in the College of Letters and Sciences, Office
of Student Academic Affairs. The services address the social, cultural and academic needs of
Latina/Latino students. Among primary objectives are assisting incoming students with the
transition to college, providing a welcoming experience at the UW-Madison, and advising and
referral services for incoming, transfer and continuing Chican@/Latin@ students. In addition to
collaborating with the Chican@/Latin@ Studies program, multicultural academic program and the
UW-Admissions Office to attract and retain students of color, Chican@/Latin@ Student Services help
maintain ongoing communication with communities throughout Wisconsin and the Midwest as well as
nationally. The coordinator of the Chican@/Latin@ student services addresses those objectives as
follows:
Principal duties:
- Provice basic academic advising to Latina/o students in the
Pathways office and refer students to the appropriate office for more specific advising
services.
- Serve as academic advisor for students in the Chican@ and Latin@ Studies
Program including holding office hours at the Chican@ and Latino@ Studies office.
- Assist in
the recruitment and admission/selection of Chican@/Latin@ students at the
university.
- Participate in the Summer Collegiate Experience and SOAR.
- Work closely with
Pathways coordinators and program staff on program planning, development and budget.
- Serve as
an advocate for Chican@/Latin@ students.
- Contact freshmen and other newly admitted
Chican@/Latin@ students to welcome them to the University and serve as a personal point of
reference for them and their families.
- Work with University student-support units, Chican@ and
Latin@ Studies program and community resources in developing effective response mechanisms and
programs that are sensitive to the needs of Chican@/Latin@ students.
- Establish and maintain
ongoing relationships with student organizations. Assist in coordinating sponsored events and
activities.
- Develop a working network of faculty, academic advisors and coordinators of
minority/disadvantaged programs in schools and colleges to assist in the transition of
Chican@/Latin@ students on campus, to support their success and identify areas of
improvement.
- Work closely and coordinate with the admissions office's campus visits for
prospective Chican@/Latin@ students.
- Establish and maintain direct contact with newly
admitted, transfer and continuing students to help access campus and community
resources.
- Establish and maintain contact with institutional office and programs serving
Chican@/Latin@ students (i.e., Office of Admissions, Office of Student Financial Services, Chican@
and Latin@ Studies program, SCE, AAP, TRIO)
- Maintain records, submit written reports, process
referral forms, draft memoranda and proposals, and write letters as needed.
- Annually assess
service functionality.
- Participate fully in Office of Student Academic Affairs (SAA)
staff-development programs, efforts to evaluate and improve academic-support programs for students,
and appropriate SAA meetings.
- Schedule evening and weekend appointments and meetings as
necessary.
- Serve as liaison with the Chican@ and Latin@ Studies Program and Latin American,
Caribbean and Iberian Studies
Program.
