Ph.D. in biostatistics, bioinformatics, computer science, or a related field
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
A dynamic leader with an outstanding academic background, strong research credentials, demonstrated commitment to education, experience in mentoring junior faculty, and proven management skills. Accomplishments as a scholar and teacher that meet the standards for a tenured faculty appointment at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Principal duties:
Scholarly activities appropriate to the faculty rank. Act as chairperson of the department with
senior administrative responsibility for the department, including medical student and graduate
education, research programs, and service to the University and the public.
As a leader
designated by the dean and department executive committee to serve as the department's chief
executive officer, a School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) department chair is accountable
for leadership responsibilities as listed in Faculty Policies of the University of
Wisconsin-Madison (FPP) Section 5.31 (see
http://www.secfac.wisc.edu/governance/FPP/Chapter_5.htm#531)
In addition, SMPH department
chairs are responsible for:
1. Establishing and maintaining the appropriate balance and high
quality of the academic department in all areas of the department's mission: teaching, research and
service. They are accountable for medical student education within the department and for
cooperating with interdisciplinary programs, established and proposed, with other departments both
within and outside the SMPH.
2. Accomplishing department-related objectives of the School's
Strategic Plan, for achieving selected performance targets established by the dean with the chair,
and for serving on SMPH and UW committees and panels.
3. In accordance with University
policies and diversity goals and objectives, proactively supporting recruitment of female and
ethnic minority faculty, as well as assuring a gender friendly environment and gender pay equity
for all departmental faculty.
4. Facilitating the career development of junior faculty within
the department. This includes providing sufficient start-up resources and protected research time
for all junior faculty and establishing and implementing an appropriate mentor policy. Chairs are
also responsible for ensuring that the executive committee accomplishes timely performance
appraisals, promotion reviews and post-promotion
reviews.
Additional Information:
The department is highly rated among programs nationally, with strong research,
educational and service programs. In cooperation with the Departments of Statistics and Computer
Sciences, and other academic programs and departments at UW-Madison, the Department features three
academic programs, in biostatistics, clinical trials, and biomedical informatics, including
computational biology. As the School transitions to a School of Medicine and Public Health, and
with the recent creation of the UW Institute for Clinical and Translational Research, the
department is poised to achieve even greater prominence and impact at all levels and on all
fronts.
The School of Medicine and Public Health particularly encourages applications and

Depending on the candidate's
area of expertise, a joint governance appointment in statistics and/or another UW department, may
be offered.
There is a possibility that this position will be offered on a 9-month
(C-basis)
appointment.
