Degree and area of specialization:
Bachelor's degree required.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Minimum one year of experience working in student advising, program planning, and/or student leadership development. Demonstrated ability to motivate & energize students, strong oral & written skills, and basic computer literacy are required. Relevant experience working in student organizing and activism around LGBT issues, multiculturalism and social justice in a higher education setting is required. Experience working in the area of leadership development and LGBTQ issues is strongly preferred. Experience in leading training programs is preferred.
Principal duties:
Student Leadership Program (50%)
Provide and coordinate educational opportunities (workshops,
seminars, focus groups, conferences), which develop individual skills, leadership skills, and
management skills, which strengthen student groups.
Advise and supervise the three student
co-coordinators of the Student Leadership Program (SLP), which provides leadership education and
skill & organizational management training to the campus.
Serve as the direct advisor to
several SLP committees including the Queer Emerging Leaders Program and the Organizational
Management Committee.
Plan and assist with the development of the SLP budget. Oversee all
payroll and committee programming budget projections and reconcile all expenditures.
Assess the
student leadership and organizational skill development needs of students and student
organizations.
Partner and liaison with other key offices working in student leadership areas,
such as University Housing, College of Engineering, School of Business, and the Wisconsin
Union.
LGBT Campus Center (25%)
Collaborate with LGBT CC Director and student leadership
in regularly reviewing the leadership training needs and goals of the student organizations.
Assist student leaders with the development of organization goals. Work with students to regularly
review, assess, and evaluate goals. Work with student leadership in identifying strategies to
strengthen those organizations, including coalition building and grassroots organizing efforts, and
student initiated and student centered programs, events and activities.
Advise and mentor
students in the areas of academic success and career development, including assisting them with
time management/priority setting, balancing academics with activism, coalition building and
grassroots organizing, assertive communication, and leadership/management skills, as well as serve
as positive role models in these areas.
Involvement Programs (15%)
Coordinate SOO student
involvement services and initiatives, promoting an engaged student body.
Coordinate the fall
and spring semester Student Organization Fairs.
Oversee departmental initiatives with SOAR,
coordination of the Interest Match Program, training SOAR staff to promote student involvement, and
serve as the department¿s representative on the SOAR planning committee.
Oversee the Kick Off
Meeting Program, the Fair Poster, and Involvement Tables.
Miscellaneous (10%)
Actively
participate in the Student Organization Office staff meetings, keep the office abreast of student
leadership and general student organization issues & activities and actively contribute to the
participatory management of the office.
Attend and actively participate in the Offices of the
Dean of Students all staff meetings; actively participate in one of the divisional strategic
planning committees; actively contribute to the Wisconsin Experience.
Support and contribute to
a positive, respectful, socially just, work and learning environment, Act as a good role model for
students and other staff.
Other duties as assigned.
This position will have a joint
appointment between the Student Organization Office and the LGBT Campus Center. Reporting to the
Director¿s of both units.
Additional Information:
Background: The Student Organization Office (SOO) is a comprehensive student
involvement and leadership center. SOO promotes student involvement as an integral part of a
University education, registers over 750 student organizations, and provides services, information,
education, support, advising and interpretation of university policies and procedures to assist
with the development and strengthening of students and student groups. SOO, assisted by two
student-directed peer to peer training programs, provides leadership development, organizational
management, and skill development opportunities in an effort to empower students, to support
quality learning experiences outside of the classroom, and to encourage active, thoughtful,
involved community citizens. The Student Organization Office is a department of the Offices of the
Dean of Students.
The LGBT Campus Center at the UW-Madison University of Wisconsin-Madison
works to help foster a safe learning environment that supports student's academic, personal, and
interpersonal growth and development. The Center achieves this through a variety of services,
including a speaker's bureau, mentoring program, support groups as well as through programming,
collaborative initiatives, supporting existing LGBT/Ally student organizations and fostering the
establishment of additional LGBT/Ally student
organizations.
