BS in microbiology or molecular biology or related field.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
At least one year of undergraduate lab research experience. Familiarity with basic microbiological techniqes is required
Principal duties:
The position is for a motivated and technically skilled individual to work on research projects
involving the reduced-genome E. coli, including vaccine studies. The research includes cloning and
expression technologies, design and construction of plasmid and phage vectors, PCR for specialized
cloning and mutagenesis methods; clone selection and screening and DNA sequencing. Conduct
experimental work on the E. coli research project. Provide verbal and written reports on project
progress. Responsible for a share of general lab responsibilities supporting all lab projects
including student hourly training and supervision, chemical and biological safety audits,
overseeing strain requests, and maintaining the clone and mutant stocks.
Preference will be
given to applicants with experience in the following techniques: PCR, gene cloning, mutagenesis,
DNA preparation, DNA transformation, DNA sequencing, use of phage and plasmid vectors. Candidate
should be capable of performing known techniques independently. Computing skills such as use of
spreadsheets, databases and online resources, DNA analysis software are each a significant
advantage. The candidate must be well organized, keep meticulous records, and should have
excellent written and verbal communication
skills.
