Degree and area of specialization:
BS degree and laboratory experience in Biotechnology/Microbiology/Biochemistry/Molecular Biology or related discipline.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Research experience in biotechnology, microbiology, molecular biology, or biochemistry. The specialist should be proficient in basic microbiological and molecular techniques, computer skills, and must be well organized, self-motivated and have interpersonal skills to be an integral part of a larger research team.
Principal duties:
The candidate will conduct research, in the laboratory of Dr. Timothy Donohue, as a member of a multidisciplinary team studying various aspects of energy generation, gene expression, stress responses, biofuels production and post-genomic biology of the photosynthetic bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides. Although the PI, Dr. Timothy Donohue, will direct experiments the specialist will be encouraged to participate in the development of new experiments and may be included as coauthors on publications. The specialist will be expected to learn on the job, so experience or a demonstrated willingness to learn new techniques is highly desired. The specialist is also responsible for or acquiring expertise in: growing and maintaining stock cultures of bacteria; purification and analysis of proteins and nucleic acids; general molecular biology techniques; maintaining experimental and lab records; and general maintenance of laboratory equipment. The specialist will also assist in ordering supplies, hiring and supervision of undergraduate student hourlies; laboratory inventory control and safety issues; and training new personnel in sound laboratory practices.
