Bachelors degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related discipline
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Minimum 1-2 years of experience in a molecular biology or biochemistry research lab before or after
graduation, with experience in molecular biology and biochemistry. A successful candidate will
have a strong background in genetics (mutagenesis, cloning and PCR techniques), microbiology
(bacterial culture and protein expression) or biochemistry (protein purification, protein analysis,
or chromatography) coupled with good quantitative skills. Must have the ability to work as a team
member. Strong written and verbal presentation skills required. Aptitude for math or computational
analysis is a plus. Excellent writing skills and ability to use the internet effectively also will
be valued.
Principal duties:
Full-time position for a Research Specialist to work on a project studying the mechanism of the
sweet receptor and sweet ligand interactions. The successful candidate will be responsible for
performing experiments and also for helping maintaining a functioning research laboratory. 70% of
time will be devoted to conducting experiments. 30% of time will be devoted to assisting the
project head or members of the team with research-related tasks such as preparation of manuscripts,
other projects such as preparing NMR samples for metabonomics and preparing reports, data analysis
and maintaining lab. The experimental work will involve growth of bacterial cultures to express
proteins for NMR spectroscopy and biochemical assay. Production of mutants using site directed
mutagenesis, PCR and molecular cloning. Protein purification by chromatography and HPLC, and
biochemical assays. The lab maintenance portion of the work will require scientific knowledge,
skill in information research, an ability to write clearly, and an ability to organize information
and research agendas. The individual will also aid in general laboratory maintenance, record
keeping, and training new personnel in good laboratory
practices.
