Degree and area of specialization:
Bachelor's degree required, master's degree preferred.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
At least two years experience in a higher education setting required. Some experience advising, teaching, or counseling high school or college students of color also required. Expertise in American Indian and Wisconsin Indian issues required; instructional experience in these areas preferred. Position requires outstanding interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively. Good writing and speaking skills essential; basic computer skills required. Extensive travel may be required at certain times of the year; valid Wisconsin driver's license required.
Principal duties:
Conduct recruitment, retention, and support activities for undergraduate students of color in the
School of Education who are seeking teaching certification. With the Assistant Dean for Minority
Student Services, develop short-term and long-term plans and an assessment process for these
activities. Advise current and prospective SoE students of color concerning academic and
non-academic matters, including campus and program admission, degree requirements, financial
aid/scholarships, housing, and employment. Monitor the academic progress of SoE undergraduates of
color seeking teacher certification and assist those experiencing academic difficulties with either
direct academic support or referral to academic support services. As possible, develop and
coordinate additional innovative retention and support activities within the School.
Visit high
schools, college fairs, UW-College campuses, technical schools, other colleges or universities, and
community centers to recruit students of color to School of Education teacher education programs.
Effectively represent the campus and the School. Work collaboratively with the Office of
Undergraduate Admissions. Respond to inquiries from students, parents, K-12 school staff, and
community agencies regarding admission and graduation requirements.
Provide instruction,
supervision, and liaison support in the areas of American Indian and Wisconsin Indian education and
teacher education. Provide instruction through workshops and classroom presentations on American
Indian and Wisconsin Indian issues to meet Act 31 requirements for teacher education. Develop,
maintain, and disseminate instructional resources relating to Wisconsin Indian history, culture,
and tribal sovereignty for UW-Madison teacher education faculty and staff. Act as liaison with
Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction consultant staff and with faculty/staff from other
UW-System institutions to identify and develop instructional resources for prospective teachers.
Promote partnerships with Wisconsin Indian communities and tribal schools across the state in order
to recruit students to UW-Madison, promote student teaching placements for UW-Madison education
students, and develop instructional resources for the campus.
Perform other duties as assigned
by the Assistant Dean for Minority Student
Services.
