Degree and area of specialization:
BA/BS in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Animal Science or related Biological Science.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Minimum 6 months of experience working in a research laboratory. Experience in culturing and transforming mammalian cells and experience in rodent handling and husbandry highly recommended.
Principal duties:
We are searching for a highly motivated and independent individual to join a well established
Transgenic Animal Facility whose mission is to provide various transgenic mouse technologies and
related support to UW-Madison investigators. The technologies include culturing mouse embryonic
stem cells, mouse embryo cyropreservation and rederivation of transgenic and "knock-out mice",
genotyping genetically modified ES cells and transgenic and knockout mice.
The individual
appointed to this position will carry his or her own projects under the supervision of the
Transgenic Animal Facility Staff. In addition, this individual will share responsibility for
laboratory and equipment maintenance, ordering, record keeping and supervising undergraduate
workers with other members.
Specific duties for the person who fills this position will
include, but are not limited to:
1) Murine embryonic stem cell culture and generating mouse
embryonic stem cell clones carrying mutations in specific cellular genes.
2) Mouse embryo
production, collection, freezing and transferring.
3) Preparing murine genomic DNA samples from
targeted embryonic stem cells and from mouse tail snips.
4) Genotyping genetically modified ES
clones by southern blot and PCR.
5) Assuming some responsibility for general laboratory and
equipment maintenance, ordering and record keeping.
The successful applicant must be able to
communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, work efficiently both independently and as a
team, have outstanding problem solving skills and excellent organizational and record keeping
skills.
The prefix and salary will be determined based on years of experience and academic
preparation.
