Degree and area of specialization:
Masters degree required or higher with degree in appropriate
discipline.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Minimum of three years experience in academic setting.
Experience providing educational
assessment and intervention strategies to diverse adult learners, preferably with students in the
biological sciences.
Familiarity with medical school curriculum preferred, to develop and manage
programs outlined; familiarity with medical school curriculum preferred.
- Excellent independent
judgment, strong grasp and creative use of problem-solving techniques, and a demonstrated ability:
to work with other staff within a team framework; to be well-organized and detail-oriented; to
communicate effectively with others in person and in writing.
- Demonstrated familiarity
with a variety of psycho-educational measures, standardized exams, test formats and test-taking
strategies.
- Experience working with culturally diverse adult professional school
students.
- Ability to apply learning theory along with reading and study skills development
to student instruction.
- Experience conducting educational workshops and seminars with both
large audiences and small groups.
- Experience in the development, conduct, and
administration of tutoring programs.
- Knowledge of and experience in working with learning
disabilities.
- Knowledge of and experience in working with other disabilities e.g.
physical, movement, visual,
hearing.
Principal duties:
- Effectively assist students in assessing, identifying, and resolving deficiencies to enhance or
remediate academic performance. Assess learning styles. Prescribe individual academic work plans.
Make proper referrals to University and community resources. Communicate with faculty, staff, and
professionals concerning reasonable educational accommodations for students.
- Provide
learning skills education and assessment. General areas of instruction include time management,
knowledge organization, reading efficiency, study and test-taking skills.
- Manage tutorial
and academic support services for students including those with learning disabilities, English
language needs, or course content deficiencies. Assist with recruitment, training and supervising
of tutors and assist with the development and administration of an evaluation of the
services.
- Refer students to appropriate school and university services when
applicable.
- Work closely with the Director to monitor student academic progress.
- Assist in the development and management of student retention programs, and licensure
exam preparation programs.
- Work with faculty and staff to develop study skills components
for high-risk courses.
- Participate as an ad hoc member of the Student Promotion Committee
- Assist in the management of a resource library containing study-skill material and basic
science reference material.
- Serve as part of an overall student development team and
perform other duties as
needed.
