Degree and area of specialization:
B.S. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, MIS, or similar area of study required. Working knowledge of Engineering software used in an academic environment. Knowledge of software and it's uses in an instructional setting Significant experience in a large University setting with IT applications in research and instruction, distance-education preferred; familiarity with student services applications a plus.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
2 years minimum experience with administration of multiple server UNIX networks. Experience with NFS, AFS, NIS, DNS, Samba, Apache, IMAP, and rsync(or similar) required. 1 or more years of C or C++, PERL, and shell script programming required. Work with servers in a VMware and SAN environment is strongly desired. Familiarity with Windows and Novell servers desired.
Principal duties:
This position reports to the director of the Computer-Aided Engineering Center and is primarily
responsible for operation and maintenance of a UNIX environment consisting of approximately 20
servers and 120 workstations. This position will focus on delivering Linux desktop systems used for
instructional and research purposes. There will also be critical responsibility for the VMware
cluster and UNIX servers that support College of Engineering's mission. This facility is part of
the College of Engineering at the University of Wisconsin - Madison and primarily serves the
instructional computing and research communities.
Responsibilities include:

Configuring, installing, and managing approximately 120 Linux client stations
* Configuring,
installing, managing, and understanding software applications used in engineering instruction and
research on Solaris and Linux workstations
* Configuring, installing, and managing file, print,
web, and mail server systems
* Configuring, installing and managing clustered virtual servers in
an environment of VMware, Fiber Channel and iSCSI virtual storage.
* Negotiating support
contracts for system and administration software
* Working with faculty, staff, and students to
understand the College's instructional and research needs of our UNIX platforms and
applications.
* Configuring, installing, and managing Condor High Throughput Computing
environment (http://www.cs.wisc.edu/condor)
* Advising instructors and researchers on efficient
use of UNIX systems in the College of Engineering.
* Participate in College and UW level peer
groups.
