Degree and area of specialization:
BS in biology, biochemistry, or related sciences is required.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
One or more years experience in laboratory research is required. Prior experience in molecular biology techniques is strongly preferred. The successful applicant must be detail oriented and have excellent organizational, time-management and interpersonal skills.
Principal duties:
The research specialist will help setup and facilitate research in a new laboratory focused on
breast cancer cell biology. The aim of the research is to probe function of protein kinases
through chemical biology, and to evaluate their potential as therapeutic cancer targets. Principal
duties will include molecular cloning, PCR, mutagenesis, and plasmid preparation. The specialist
will also organize and restock supplies and help maintain laboratory compliance. A talented
specialist interested in broadening skills may also participate in experiments involving cell
culture, transfection, siRNA, FACS, and fluorescent microscopy. Additionally, the specialist will
attend laboratory meetings and may be called on to train student hourly employees and perform other
work-related duties.
The research specialist is expected to follow the policies, procedures,
guidelines, and standards for excellence and professionalism established by the UWCCC and the
University of Wisconsin. Additionally, this position will assure that all clinical and laboratory
research activity adheres to the Code of Federal Regulations and ICH
guidelines.
