Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Ten or more years of progressively responsible information technology experience is required. At least six of those years must be in a senior leadership capacity in IT organizations with at least three years in higher education IT leadership. The selected candidate must have demonstrated outstanding leadership including working with diverse groups of people collaboratively in gaining consensus. The selected candidate will have direct experience leading information technology functions such as faculty and student support units (help desks and public computing facilities, infrastructure, and the like); experience in managing professional staff; negotiating complex contracts; budget management in a cost recovery environment; delivering high-quality customer service; and success in fostering a multi-cultural environment. The successful candidate will have experience in the investigation and analysis of issues and use creative resourcefulness for successful solutions to assure the programs and initiatives meet the established goals; have demonstrable ability to conceptualize, articulate, and implement IT solutions to the chancellor, provost, deans and directors, and others in the campus community. Excellent interpersonal skills, communication and presentation skills are required with a high degree of energy, initiative, and organizational ability.
Principal duties:
The Division of Information Technology (DoIT) at the University of Wisconsin, Madison has a vacancy
for an Associate CIO/Director. This position will serve as DoIT's Chief Operating Officer. DoIT
is a large and complex organization, providing information technology services to UW-Madison, UW
System and other agencies. DoIT employs about 800 people and has a budget of approximating $70
million. This Associate CIO/Director will provide senior leadership for DoIT as well as
responsibility for campus-wide planning and policy development.
Major duties and
responsibilities of this position include:
- Serve as one of two Associate CIOs/Directors
reporting to the Chief Information Officer/Executive Director/Vice Provost for Information
Technology. This Associate CIO will take a senior leadership role in information service
activities including directing Network Services, User Services, Policy and Planning, Security,
Enterprise Internet Services, Human Resources, Communications and Process Improvement.

Ensure that information technology services provided by DoIT are appropriate and effective in
supporting the technology requirements of the UW-Madison community and that they provide excellent
customer service.
- Take a key leadership role in building and maintaining a community of
IT service providers across the campus. This position will be the high-level point person for
addressing campus concerns and issues about DoIT directions or services across campus and
throughout the university system.
- Along with the CIO, the other Associate CIO and DoIT
Directors, ensure that DoIT programs, services and operations are appropriate, effective and
efficient.
- Represent UW-Madison in national, regional and other forums in her/his areas
of responsibility and expertise.
50% Serve as the chief operating officer for DoIT.
Initiate, oversee and ensure completion of DoIT projects and initiatives that fall within the
portfolio of information technology and support services - providing guidance and leadership to the
key DoIT leaders in those areas and working with appropriate committees to ensure that programs and
services are appropriate.
15% Lead planning activities within DoIT and provide leadership
to campus wide information technology planning activities.
10% Provide leadership and
direction in areas of information technology policy. In this area, the Associate CIO will often
work with the campus legal office, may consult to technology providers at UW System Administration
(UWSA), and will periodically be called upon to provide insight and support throughout the system.
Attention to national policy and policy-making bodies is also a part of this
responsibility.
5% Be the focal point within the CIO's office for issues and concerns of
the campus. Working with the DoIT leadership, assume responsibility for the development and
implementation of action plans for improvements as appropriate.
5% Work with our campus
community of IT service providers to ensure that a collaborative environment exists for all IT
support staff.
5% Participate on relevant committees, task forces and councils at the
national, regional, system and university level.
5% Maintain professional competence
through conferences, seminars, readings, and participation with counterparts at other institutions.
Present professional papers on subjects related to responsibilities and expertise.
5%
Substitute for the CIO/Executive Director of DoIT as
required.
