Degree and area of specialization:
Bachelors degree in Journalism, English, or Communications required
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Minimum of one to three years relevant professional experience in communications or related field. The successful candidate must have demonstrated writing, grammar, proofreading and editing skills. The ability to comprehend and interpret medical, research and statistical subject matter is required. Knowledge of federal, state, and university grant regulations highly desirable. Must be able to work efficiently and accurately with multiple faculty and staff of all levels. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Principal duties:
The UW Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR) is a new, multidisciplinary
research institute serving clinical and translational researchers at the UW, Marshfield Clinic, and
various research networks state wide. The ICTR Scientific Writer will provide scientific writing
and editing support for over 500 ICTR research investigators and scholars. This individual will
interact with investigators to develop scientific results and grant concepts into draft documents
for review, revision, and final product for submission. In addition s/he will produce, prepare and
distribute written material in support and promotion of the ICTR. Specific duties
include:
Guide investigators and scholars in framing scientific discussion in papers;
provide instruction in important elements in writing to better articulate specific objectives for
proposals.
Provide editorial analysis of manuscript submissions for conformity to journal
requirements for technical language.
Conduct training sessions on abstract writing and grant
preparation for junior investigators.
Attend mock study sections; aid student scholars and
junior investigators in appropriately modifying grant applications based on constructive
criticisms.
Collaborate in preparing grant applications and papers following upon the
scientific discoveries of junior investigators; assist investigators in grant development to ensure
compliance with all IRB, safety, University, and ethical requirements.
Independently
write, edit, design and produce internal promotional and informational materials and documents
Content development and writing for all marketing and communication pieces to support
ICTR's efforts in member recruitment, engagement, retention, and service delivery
Creatively
identify, pursue, and develop other communication needs to build recognition and quality of ICTR
and its programs
Assist and collaborate with other editorial staff to meet ICTR objectives
and deadlines.
As needed, provide editorial and writing support for ICTR annual progress
report and grant renewal submissions.
