Degree and area of specialization:
Master's degree is required with specialization in student personnel, education administration, counseling, or related field.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Minimum of three years progressively responsible work experience in higher education administrative
settings, and/or student services administration.
2-5 years work experience in
guidance/counseling, student personnel, working with students in a higher education academic
environment. Academic advisement experience preferred.
Working knowledge of undergraduate
curriculum, academic policy and support services required.
Ability to enable students to
define their own goals, strategies for achieving them, and means to evaluate
progress.
Familiarity with student information systems and administrative software is
essential.
Ability to learn quickly and work both independently and cooperatively.
Strong
communication skills in one-on-one and group settings.
Willingness to work with new technologies
and ability to adapt to change.
Excellent organizational
skills.
Principal duties:
Major Responsibilities:
Direct Undergraduate Admissions and Advising Services ¿
30%
Provide leadership and coordination of undergraduate admissions and advising services for
the School of Nursing which includes students on the UW-Madison campus, the Western campus and
students enrolled in the BSN@Home program.
Recruit, train and supervise advising staff (2.5
FTE) and support staff (0.80 FTE). Plan for continued professional development of
staff.
Oversee the undergraduate admissions process (both the basic and BSN@Home programs);
provide consultation to Admissions Coordinator and Admissions Committee as needed. Serve as liaison
with UG Office of Admissions.
Monitor advisor assignments and reallocate advisor assignments
based on workload and best practices
Oversee and monitor SOAR advising schedule
Develop and implement strategies to provide more efficient delivery of advising
services
Collaborate with Director of Diversity and Career Services Program Manager to
develop and offer academic success initiatives.
Maintain communications with School of
Nursing faculty regarding academic needs and concerns of students. Provide information for
decision making to Undergraduate Program Committee, Admissions Committee, and Faculty
Organization.
Coordination of Student Services for the Nursing Wester Campus and BSN@Home
Program ¿ 20%
Coordinate student services functions and activities with the Nursing Western
Campus.
¿ Meet with WC faculty regarding policies and procedures and clarify roles concerning
student issues and student records.
¿ Assist with planning and present at the Western Campus
Orientation
¿ Coordinate with UW-La Crosse liaison regarding student support services (computer
labs, library, health, etc.) located on the La Crosse campus
¿ Develop Western Campus timetable
and disseminate appropriately
¿ Provide frequent on ¿site advising sessions
¿ Assist students
with non-standard program schedules (ROTC, Chancellor¿s Scholars, etc)
¿ Monitor Western Campus
Honors students regarding honors degree requirements
Serve as UW-Madison BSN@Home Advisor
Liaison with the UW System Statewide Program
¿ Oversee placing partner institution¿s students in
UW-Madison¿s elective courses (N470 and N746)
¿ Work in partnership with the other four partners
around student issues and concerns to find common resolutions
¿ Assure that BSN@Home courses are
listed appropriately with correct footnotes in UW-Madison timetable.
¿ Assure that UW-Madison
advisors have completed all demographic information for the Madison students within BSN@Home
database to provide pertinent up-to-date information (admit term, graduation date,
etc.)
Monitor Student Progress in the Program ¿ 15%
With advising staff, review
Registrar¿s Office reports at mid semester and at the end of each semester to determine students¿
compliance with academic action policy. Determine appropriate action.
Verify Dean¿s List
recognition and Graduation with Distinction and coordinate official notification
Review and
certify final degree checks. Confirm list of graduate for faculty review. Oversee graduation
verification letters.
Monitor grade changes on an ongoing basis for impact on academic
action or recognition.
Approve electronic course change and retroactive drops requests.
Degree Audit Reporting (DARS) ¿ 5%
Manage, coordinate, and maintain use of DARS
(degree audit system) to provide faculty, staff, and students with accurate degree progress
information. Serve as the DARS encoder for the School of Nursing.
¿ Responsible for DARS coding
as curriculum or policy changes are made.
¿ Represent School of Nursing at DARS encoders
meetings.
¿ Communicate information related to DARS to School of Nursing
stakeholders.
¿ Train and serve as a resource for other Advisors to complete DARS
exceptions.
¿ Ensure that DARS reports are used to their optimal potential for record-keeping
purposes.
¿ Identify ways to use DARS technology optimally.
Advising ¿ 25%
Serve
as academic advisor for approximately 100 students helping them to plan their academic programs to
meet campus and nursing program requirements.
Advise prospective community and currently
enrolled students regarding School Nurse Certification requirements; Assist with registration
process and approve substitution courses for Education Policy and C&I course requirements if
content is basically the same
Define academic requirements, admissions requirements and
assist students with academic choices. Interpret and apply university rules and regulations in a
way that allows academic flexibility within the limits of school and university
requirements.
Problem solve with students around their academic program and other factors
affecting their lives as students. This involves planning programs based on a variety of variables
and circumstances (i.e. returning adult learner with a family; registered nurses working full-time,
the commuting students). Advise and/or refer students to other campus level services as needed.
Provide accurate information about educational options, degree requirements, and School of
Nursing policies.
Help students find and integrate the university resources. Determine need
for referrals and direct students as appropriate to campus offices and support services (i.e.
financial aid, counseling services, career advising, etc.).
Make informal evaluations of
previous course work for prospective applicants and coordinate admission activities related to
admission to the RN to MS accelerated track.

Represent the School of Nursing on the Council on Academic Advising (CAA) and campus
initiatives (e.g. E-Re-entry, Imaging).
