Working title:
Researcher
Official title:
RESEARCHER(E05DN) or ASSOC RESEARCHER(E05FN) or ASST RESEARCHER(E05LN)
Degree and area of specialization:
MS in computer science
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
At least 5 years of experience in computational modeling of neuronal systems and experience developing novel algorihms for analyzing neuronal discharge activity. Also, experience in developing and implementing computer systems for electrophyisological data collection and analysis. Must have at least 5 years of experience in computer programming with C++, LabView, Matlab. MS Access, Xcell, MS Word, Visual basic. Experience in MS Windows and Unix environment. Knowledge of basic statistical methods.
Principal duties:
A position is available in the lab of Dr. Erwin Montgomery at the Wisconsin National Primate
Research Center. The laboratory's efforts include research in nonhuman primates as well as normal
humans and persons affected by diseases such as Parkinson's disease. The main efforts involve
recording various forms of electrical signals generated in the brain and muscles as well as motor
performance. The laboratory's research has extended to understand how electrical stimulation of
the brain can ease the suffering and disability caused by neurological and psychiatric disorders.
Brain stimulations, such as Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), are remarkable therapies and succeed when
all manner of other treatments, including brain transplants and gene therapy fail or provide
insufficient benefit. The expectation of this research is that a greater understanding of DBS will
help improve this therapy and make it useful for a larger range of neurological and psychiatric
disorders.
The selected incumbent will bring unique skills and knowledge in order to
accomplish the following duties: Responsible for the development of computer algorithms and
implementation of algorithms for creating complex neuronal networks, and the development and
implementaiton of computer algoritms for analysis of neuronal activities.
