Degree and area of specialization:
Bachelor's degree in public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, psychology, sociology, or related field required, with course work in social science methodologies or health care preferred.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Required: one to two years experience in a research setting conducting research studies, research
management, and project management. Experience with computer applications such as Windows 2000,
Microsoft Word and Microsoft Powerpoint. Experience with data management programs such as SPSS and
Microsoft Excel. Strong communication and organization skills, and the ability to adapt to various
research methodologies as well as to many work environments.
Preferred: SAS, Minitab, and
Microsoft Access experience, the ability to troubleshoot basic computer technical problems, and
experience in handling large
datasets.
Principal duties:
Participate in new and ongoing research projects at the Center for Urban Population Health. The
Center is located at Aurora Sinai Medical Center in Milwaukee, WI. Provide statistical analysis,
data management, and other research assistance to investigators at the Center, which includes
investigators from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, the University
of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and Aurora Health Care, Inc. Will work directly with investigators,
physician and non-physician providers, clinic staff, and patients on a variety of projects. Must
be willing to work at multiple locations including Aurora Health Care and other community clinic
sites, and/or non-clinical locations. Must have the ability to negotiate with site personnel,
develop rapport with critical staff, problem solve, and establish systems that fit the culture of
the individual research site.
1. Participate in project coordination and as a research
project coordinator.
2. Develop mechanisms to collect data appropriate to the standards and
goals of the individual study and study sites. These mechanisms may include focus groups,
face-to-face or telephone interviews, questionnaires, medical record reviews, or extracting
information from computerized information systems.
3. Create surveys for research projects,
using survey software (Teleform).
4. Perform data collection activities by serving as a
facilitator of focus groups, conducting subjective interviews, extracting medical and demographic
data from medical records, administering questionnaires, or observing and rating responses of
learners to standardized encounters.
5. Set up research databases, enter data from the studies,
clean datasets, and report data in tabular and graphic formats.
6. Supervise manual data entry,
survey distribution, scanning, and compilation of results by support staff, as required.
7.
Complete independent statistical analysis of research data (descriptive and bivariate) and prepare
written presentation of results. May provide oral presentation of results.
8. Prepare and
submit regulatory reports and communicate with Institutional Review Board(s) for projects, as
necessary.
9. Conduct research literature reviews and assist Center staff in obtaining research
articles through UW Madison, UW-Milwaukee, and Aurora Health Care, Inc. libraries.
10. Assist in
writing, reviewing, and editing grant initiatives, reports, and scientific articles for submission
to peer-reviewed publications.
11. Process laboratory speciments for various health services
research projects, as required.
12. Attend and participate in research project meetings and
Center meetings.
13. Perform other duties, as
appropriate.
