Degree and area of specialization:
Bachelor's degree required; degree in computer science or computer engineering preferred.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
At least one year of experience working with computer hardware and software applications required. Prior experience working in an environment in support of teaching, distant education, and research preferred. Experience with the interface between computer systems and complex electronic equipment preferred. Strong verbal and written communication skills required.
Principal duties:
The Information Processing Consultant in Communicative Disorders has a wide range of
responsibilities within the unit. In addition to traditional desktop support responsibilities, the
IPC provides essential support and management of our distance learning program and courses at the
undergraduate, graduate, and Ph.D. levels. This person would also be charged with management and
implementation of our ongoing and a recently funded ILME projects, support for our newly
established client management system, support and direction of our Instructional Technology
Laboratory (ITL), integration of ITL technology into our distance learning courses, as well as
essential management of all departmental servers and virtual servers.
The IPC will work
under general supervision and make independent decisions; establish and maintain an effective
working relationship with other staff, faculty, and students; and learn and grow with the
department.
ADMIN DUTIES (10%)
-Install, configure, monitor, tune and troubleshoot
network and desktop operating systems, and other system (including security) software and network
hardware. Administer access to network resources. Maintain and ensure availability of remote
network services.
-Establish and maintain departmental servers and virtual
servers.
-Research and make recommendations for new, emerging, and/or upgraded network software
and hardware. Understand and resolve integration issues.
-Maintain network directories and
network access structures. Perform backup of network servers on a regular basis and perform
recovery operations as necessary. Analyze and troubleshoot network problems.
-Establish,
maintain and use remote management facilities (including software distribution, remote control, and
remote inventory) for workstations and servers.
-Configure, monitor and maintain internet
firewall. (Cisco ASDM)
-Maintain a disaster-recovery plan and tape rotation scheme for all
critical files stored on the departmental web and file servers, utilizing VERITAS Backup Exec and
OS tools.
-Implement and troubleshoot remote access services, including 802.11g wireless and
WebDAV/FTP.
-Assist with the diagnosis and resolution of problems related to internet
applications and systems software and/or hardware (may include gateways, hubs, routers, servers,
and bridges) and communications between connected computer platforms.
-Work with DoIt staff to
diagnose and resolve complex problems related to computer network software, applications and system
software and/or hardware (may include gateways, hubs, routers, switches) and communications between
connected computer platforms. Become proficient with DoIT¿s AANTS web-based management
software.
-Possess advanced knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server 2000 and 2003 Active Directory
and Domain environments, including installations of DNS, SMTP, and IIS.
-Configure and maintain
a DHCP server for the department (Microsoft)
-Maintain a network-managed Symantec Anti-virus
system
WEBMASTER/WEB DESIGNER/ WEB PROGRAMMER DUTIES (20%)
-Implement and support a new
Content Management System in consultation with DoIt
-Create, design, update and maintain the
departmental web presence
-Keep website up-to-date and well-organized considering all members of
the departmental website audience, e.g. potential students, current undergrads and grads,
professional colleagues
-Program web applications for various departmental tasks such as online
contact forms, course waiting lists, online faculty recruitment program, and more utilizing
knowledge of the following programming languages and environments: Active Server Pages (ASP), PHP,
MySQL and SQL language
-Maintain accessibility standards through the design and content
creation process
-Consult with faculty and staff on how web-based applications can be used to
improve processes
-Support and maintain a popular web-based survey system,
(LimeSurvey)
HELP DESK DUTIES (30%)
-Provide support to departmental users with a wide
variety of operating systems and packages, including Windows XP, Vista and Mac OS X.
-Possess
advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office versions XP, 2003, and 2007 on PC; Mac Office 2004 and 2008
on Macintosh
-Create, update and deploy hardware-independent Windows XP/Vista software images,
making extensive use of the Microsoft SYSPREP suite of tools and imaging software from Acronis,
Altiris and/or Norton Ghost
-Provide support on the basic use and operation of various
statistical software packages, including but not limited to: SPSS, AMOS, Stata and Matlab.
-Assist users in the creation and maintenance of websites utilizing HTML code, Dreamweaver and
FrontPage
-Control and meter software licensing utilizing KeyServer, SPSS network license
manager and various other software license managers.
-Provide support to office staff and
faculty in the use of graphic design and desktop publishing software including: Adobe Creative
Suite software (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat)
-Configure and support a departmental
instance and coordinate the use of WiscCal (Oracle Calendaring Suite)
-Provide advanced hardware
maintenance (including: printers, Dell desktop systems and laptops, Macintosh systems, server RAID
arrays). Replace internal components of systems as necessary.
DISTANCE EDUCATION
DUTIES (30%)
-Maintain Polycom VSX8000 videoconferencing equipment
-Be able to program and
troubleshoot problems with a Crestron Control System
-Maintain all other aspects of the high
tech classroom (projector, audio system, etc.)
-Knowledge of Microsoft Streaming Server for
taped classes
Other Duties (5%)
-Provide hands-on training for faculty, staff and
students using research, instructional, and administrative software. Training will include
one-on-one or small groups.
-Consult and advise faculty about hardware and software appropriate
to department's research, instruction and administration needs. Evaluate, purchase, and
install.
-Develop, implement, and maintain computer access policies.
Professional
Development (5%)
-Act as liaison with DoIT
-Maintain knowledge of emerging
technologies
-Submit Instruction Lab Modernization (ILME)
