B.S./M.S. in the Biological Sciences preferred

Experience working in a molecular/cellular biology laboratory preferred.
Principal duties:
The Research Specialist will assist the Principal Investigator, Assistant Professor Randal S.
Tibbetts, on a project to decipher
how mutations in DNA repair proteins manifest as
neurodegeneration syndromes in humans. Particular emphasis will be
placed on elucidating a
pathway linking the ataxia-telangiectasia-mutated (ATM) protein kinase to the cyclic AMP
response
element-binding protein transcription factor and crucial regulator of gene expression.
The Research Specialist will be
primarily responsible for the daily execution of experiments
relevant to this project. The Research Specialist will receive
instruction from the Principal
Investigator and will meet with him once a week to discuss results and plan
additional
experiments. Methods to be employed include: mammalian cell transfection, SDS-PAGE
and western blotting, real-time PCR,
site-directed mutagenesis, DNA cloning, protein expression
and purification. In addition, to these primary responsibilities, the
Research Specialist will
also be responsible for ordering and organizing lab supplies and stocks. The Research Specialist
will
also help manage one or more undergraduate assistants that perform routine laboratory tasks
such as media preparation and
lab maintenance. The Research Specialist will also work closely
with graduate students, will present research findings at lab
meetings, and will be encouraged
to develop critical thinking skills that may lead to independent research projects.
The
potential also exists for travel to scientific
meetings.
