Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Experience in the use of SAS and SPLUS or R. Some experience in the use of the UNIX operating system and with the UNIX programming environment and tools is highly desirable. Familiarity with clinical trials research is highly desirable, as is experience in working with data from large, diverse databases. Good communication skills, both written and oral, are necessary.
Principal duties:
Working as a member of the Statistical Data Analysis Center (SDAC) in the Clinical Trials Program
of the Department of Biostatistics and Medical Informatics, the Researcher will be responsible for
SDAC activities in major, leading-edge multicenter clinical trials to address significant public
health and clinical research questions. The incumbent will have involvement in clinical trials
design, consult on issues of clinical trial conduct, participate in the design and creation of the
materials for independent Data and Safety Monitoring Committee review, FDA submission and
peer-reviewed publications of clinical trials results as well as numerous other manuscripts based
on clinical trial data.
The Researcher will work jointly with the principal investigators
(biostatisticians) in creating and implementing the analysis plans for clinical trials. The
Researcher will be responsible for working independently to create and document SAS datasets used
for interim and final analyses, data presentation and report generation. Within the scope of the
projects the incumbent will conduct independent research to better enable the presentation of
results. Additional responsibilities involved in the analysis of clinical research data include
presenting results at meetings of the Data and Safety Monitoring Committee and prepartion of
manuscripts reporting the study results.
The incumbent will work within an ongoing research
team to design and develop innovative methodology for the generalization of a flexible system for
the scientific visualization of research results. This involves extensive and innovative use of
SAS and SPLUS or R, statistical software including macros and graphics, the use of technical
publishing software and often the use of the LaTex programming language in a UNIX environment. The
Researcher will participate in policy development, long and short-range project planning, and
identifying, proposing and implementing research projects aimed at developing new technology and
applications.
Other duties may include assisting principal investigators in research grant
applications, attending professional meetings and presenting research being done within SDAC, as
well as conducting technical seminars and training sessions for the research
group.
